I grabbed compiz from sid. Are you saying that tilda won't even run on your GNOME setup? I don't see why the compositor should matter, but, again, I can't test for you. Sorry, hopefully someone else will chime in.

I just checked on my wheezy system running compiz standalone and tilda ran successfully on startup when I added the following to my startup script... (sleep 3s && tilda) & I'm out of town so I can't test this on my desktop running gnome-shell, but you should be able to add the same comma...
