Re: Who or what was responsible?
I always do a "dry run" before backing up with grsync. More than once, I had plugged in the drive but forgotten to mount it so in the dry run, new folders were created to receive the data. After mounting the drive, everything worked normally.

If you are not locked into the Debian installer, you might want to look at refractasnapshot and refractainstaller

Re: init diversity in Debian
Does Devuan supply the missing init scripts for all of those packages? No we don't. Might be worth considering then, quite a few important services are on the list. If someone squawks, we'll have a look. We really don't need to do extra work if no one is experiencing an issue. Unless, you are offer...

Re: init diversity in Debian
Sounds like our beloved Leader is keen for that not to happen: I'm concerned that removing Elogind commits us to Systemd-based solutions with a very high cost to try new things or change direction. For me that's a step we should be very careful before taking. And he proposes a GR vote to formally d...

Nope. It's just responsible for wanting to eat the entire pie.sunrat wrote:systemd is responsible for Brexit, climate change, wars, refugees, US mass shootings, and the decline of honeybees among other things. Or was it Bayer/Monsanto? One of them anyway. It's all part of the deep state.

Re: Is there any software you miss that used to be in Debian
I miss truly modular software free of systemd hooks that limit users' freedoms. This is the tragedy of the path that Debian has taken. I think we need an addition to Goodwin's law: "The longer a thread in this forum goes on, someone will sooner or later blame Debian for implementing systemd.&q...

Re: Can't sign into Chromium
I NEVER sign in to chromium. Why would anyone want to do that is beyond me. Ah yes . . . the fallacy of "it's so convenient" perhaps? But at what cost . . . I suspect that sign in is one of the hooks that chromium intentionally disables. Though I do see it in my chromium; just never tried ...

I thought this thread was resurrected as an homage to Garry who is so missed around here and content was irrelevant.

Re: Why do people give up , instead of provideing details
My own experience of peoples behaviour and reactions, is they cannot seem to follow simple instructions. Selective reading (if that's such a thing)? Boredom? Frustration at their own inability? Unable to articulate (that's one I can struggle with)? It's a sign of the times and it looks like it's al...

Re: Why do people give up , instead of provideing details
That should be "spelt" not "spelled". From Wikipedia says: Spelt (Triticum spelta; Triticum dicoccum), also known as dinkel wheat or hulled wheat, is a species of wheat cultivated since approximately 5000 BC. It is one of the grains (along with kamut, brown rice, oats, mi...

@CwF . . . Indeed. Like this Mike Wallace interview 60 years ago in 1958 with Aldous Huxley:

@CwF . . . if you have not already watched this, now would be the time. Eben Moglen nails it:

And back on topic . . . I ran and it returned nothing.

Re: Canonical goes full snap, Chromium is next
We know what super-sizing has done to our health. It is a sloppy, unmindful and ultimately destructive habit to feed our cravings for all sorts of things that ultimately only complicate our lives. Convenience is a trap . . . beware.
