Installing Wine : broken packages, unmet dependencies

#1 Post by xar »

Following the instructions in https://wiki.winehq.org/Debian I get this error when trying to install wine in Debian 10:

Code: Select all

apt-get install winehq-stable

Code: Select all

Reading package lists... Done
    Building dependency tree
    Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
     winehq-stable : Depends: wine-stable (= 7.0.0.0~buster-1)
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
So I try to install wine-stable and get the same output asking for wine-stable-i386 (= 7.0.0.0~buster-1)

When trying to install wine-stable-i386, we are led to an unsolvable situation:

I have checked that I allowed i386: dpkg --print-foreign-architectures prints i386

Before I had wine already installed with no major problem, but when installing another package, wine and a bunch of lib* packages were removed. I don't know exactly which package caused this, but was probably one of these: qt5-default, openssl, libc6, zlib1g:amd64, build-essential or pkg-config. My guess is that one of these packages is incompatible with wine or with i386 stuff entirely. Looking at dpkg -l I see that often i386 packages have the flag 'rc', meaning that they were uninstalled leaving config files, so maybe it uninstalled wine and i386 lib* stuff. Also I see that I have installed libc6-dev. Is it possible that this is a development version of libc6 which is conflicting with my stable package? Could it be related to this? https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian ... nkenDebian

I tried to install winehq-stable with aptitude but doesn't solve the deal:

Code: Select all

aptitude install winehq-stable

Code: Select all

Finally just if it matters, my sources.list looks like this:

Code: Select all

deb [arch=amd64] http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free
    deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free

    deb [arch=amd64] http://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ buster/updates main contrib non-free
    deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ buster/updates main contrib non-free

    deb [arch=amd64] http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free
    deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free

    deb http://security.debian.org/ buster/updates non-free contrib main
I don't remember why I have that [arch=amd64] but I tried to remove it and nothing changed.

Any idea?

From your link, did you do this?
Enable 32 bit packages (if you haven't already):

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

Any reason for not using the debian way?

I had a similar problem trying to upgrade wine from Debian repo in Bullseye which is still ancient v5.0.3-3, to winehq-stable v7.0.0.0~bullseye-1. Never solved it. All just to get a couple of new audio plugins working.
Thankfully the one I use regularly (TDR Nova which doesn't have a similar Linux native alternative) still works with the old wine.
Lotsa luck!

I tried, but when I try to install wine32 this comes up

Code: Select all

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package wine32 is a virtual package provided by:
  winehq-staging 7.15~buster-1
  winehq-stable 7.0.0.0~buster-1
  winehq-devel 7.15~buster-1
You should explicitly select one to install.

E: Package 'wine32' has no installation candidate
Trying to install winehq-stable then leads us to the starting point. Haven't tried to install the stagning and devel but I'm not sure if that's advisable.

I met the same problem, and solved it rather easily by using

Code: Select all

 #apt install wine
instead of

Code: Select all

#apt install winehq-stable
Up to that point I had followed the winehq instructions exactly.

In Debian, I would just use Lutris, Playonlinux or some other wrapper that automatically installs different statically compiled versions of Wine or Proton. That way I don't get to mess with dependencies in case I need several different versions.
Image Stable / Asus VivoBook X421DA / AMD Ryzen 7 3700U / Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx (Picasso) / 8 GB RAM / 512GB NVMe

In Bullseye, that will give you the old version:

Code: Select all

wine/stable,stable,now 5.0.3-3 all [installed,automatic]
Works here for some programs but not for some newer programs.

Did you try with winetricks [simple tool to work around common problems in Wine]

@xar As @roseway suggested, you may have to settle for the Debian repo version or playonlinux as @canci suggested. I just tried again and had similar dependency conflicts to yours. Wasn't able to install from WineHQ without it removing dozens of essential packages.

Just

Code: Select all

#apt install wine

Those who have lost data
...and those who have not lost data YET ”

Works here for some programs but not for some newer programs.
Did you try with winetricks [simple tool to work around common problems in Wine]
Situation has been well discussed at LinuxMusicians forum. Said applications just need a more recent version of wine than 5.0.3. Not really relevant to current topic anyway.

The first question is maybe: why do you need wine from an external repository

Code: Select all

$ apt show wine | grep Home
Homepage: https://www.winehq.org

Official Repo

Code: Select all

wine32/stable 5.0.3-3 i386
wine64/stable 5.0.3-3 amd64
WineHQ Repo

Code: Select all

wine-staging-i386/stable,now 7.15~bullseye-1 i386
winehq-staging/stable,now 7.15~bullseye-1 amd64
Wine's usefulness grows far faster than most other software from what I've seen. An older browser won't typically prevent you from going to a given webpage. Upgrading wine is more of a noticeable change in that more Windows stuff actually runs instead of doesn't. Some can't escape it. I know I use wine to run Battle.net and it runs better than it did on Windows thus far. The initial client load time is slow as molasses but after that it rolls way better than before.

Just out of insatiable curiosity and doggedness, I just installed wine-stable from WineHQ repo on a brand new install of Bullseye/KDE following exactly the instructions on the WineHQ wiki Debian page. Went without a hitch.

Code: Select all

wine-stable-amd64/stable,now 7.0.0.0~bullseye-1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
wine-stable-i386/stable,now 7.0.0.0~bullseye-1 i386 [installed,automatic]
wine-stable/stable,now 7.0.0.0~bullseye-1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
winehq-stable/stable,now 7.0.0.0~bullseye-1 amd64 [installed]
Haven't tried to run anything with wine yet.
I have absolutely no idea why it wouldn't install on my original Bullseye which was installed about 18 months ago.

@xar
I have checked that I allowed i386: dpkg --print-foreign-architectures prints i386
Ok, but why do you force [arch=amd64] in your sources.list if you want to install i386 components ?

Code: Select all

deb [arch=amd64] http://deb.debian.org/debian buster main contrib non-free
deb [arch=amd64] http://deb.debian.org/debian-security/ buster/updates main contrib non-free
deb [arch=amd64] http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-updates main contrib non-free
+ where is your winehq sources.list ? Is it correct for buster ?

My wine sources are the ones I downloaded following the abovementioned instructions:

Code: Select all

Types: deb
URIs: https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/debian
Suites: buster
Components: main
Architectures: amd64 i386
Signed-By: /usr/share/keyrings/winehq-archive.key
I can install wine or wine64, but they will complain that I don't have wine32 and won't run my windows programs.

About the amd64 thing, I tried to remove it and adding i386 as well, but no difference. Seems my Debian doesn't want to install any i386 thing in general, and I think that's the issue that I should solve in order to install wine correctly. I suspect that this happened after I installed some of the packages that I mention in the first post.

For example, if I try to install lib6c:i386, debian wants to remove everything else:

Code: Select all

Not sure you correctly interpret what apt reports.
what is reporting this.

Code: Select all

apt autoremove -s

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core aptitude-common libgtksourceview-3.0-common

I'm sure I don't interpret it correctly, my level of knowledge in this is very low.

So

Code: Select all

apt-autoremove -s
reports:

Code: Select all

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done

And

Code: Select all

apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-core aptitude-common libgtksourceview-3.0-common
reports:

Code: Select all
