Shared folder in VirtualBox

#1 Post by kskruser »

OK; I'm stumped, probably by a simple thing:

Running (gasp) Windows XP in an Oracle VirtualBox, under host Debian Buster / KDE. Host runs fine, as does XP in VirtualBox.

BUT: I haven't figured out how to do a shared folder. I can define one on the VBOX settings for the XP guest (locally at ~/Shared), but I CANNOT FIND it in the XP guest.

I realize this may be simple, but I need help! Specifically, where is it in the XP guest? Do I need to do something in the XP guest to 'enable' it?

Any response will be greatly appreciated. Thanx!

  XP works great in a VM if you just need it to run a particular piece of software. I have a few MS Access 2000 database applications that I wrote 20 years ago and which I still haven't found a replacement for. Just make sure that XP can't get out there on the big, bad internet.

In XP, go to My Computer -> Tools -> Map Network Drive. Follow the wizard.

If you set it up correctly, you shouldn't have to do anything special to find the shared folder.

Did you install the Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack on the host?
Did you install the Guest Additions on the guest (Windows XP)?
Did you set it up under Machine > Settings > Shared Folder ?

Black Mirror, Black Mirror, lit by LED,
what version of VBox does OP have exactly?

The magic mirror says you have the 6.1.22 packages directly from Oracle instead of the patched 6.1.22 version that someone could have backported from Debian Sid. Is this correct, or do I have to chastise the mirror with greasy thumbprints all over its face?
