Internet connection on VM
Hey guy and gals,
im using debian10 and a virtuell machine with debian 10 (qemu-kvm / virt-manager)
On the Host im running expressvpn and i want to use privatevpn on my VM.
The moment i connect to the VPN on my VM, i cant get a connection to firefox or chrome, i cant download anything through the terminal. But i can connect to Teamspeak and i can ping google.com (so theres a internet connection).
If im not connected to the second VPN i can use the browser and i can download things through the terminal. But the moment i connect to the second VPN i cant use the browser.
What is going on there? It worked like that for the past 3 years (first on debian9 and then on debian10).
Please if you can give me a hint or have a solution let me know, im struggling here...
Thanks!!!

Remember this is a user forum. If no users have experience or knowledge about what you are asking, no-one will have an answer for you.
I know bugger all about VPNs or VMs but you have given almost zero detail with which to guess.
One thing I can think of is how is your networking set up? eg. NAT or passthough to a second network card on the host?

Re: Internet connection on VM
@sunrat The Network is setup via NAT. I didnt changed anything it just stopped working from one day to another.
When i use Expressvpn on the VM i have Internet. But the Moment i connect with a different VPN (via openvpn) the problems appear.

Don't have an answer, but maybe something in this thread will give you an idea of what types of things you should be looking for..

Re: Internet connection on VM
Interesting, but perplexing. I'm intrigued and will bite.
To review; you're running one VPN (expressvpn) on a host machine, running a virtual manager. You're running a virtual machine from the virt manager that you want to run a completely different VPN (openvpn) at the same time, correct?
Why would you think your VM would not use the internet of the host machine (i.e., expressvpn), and might this VPN traffic used on the VM have a problem traversing the host VPN to communicate with its mother ship?
Aren't you basically attempting to run a VPN within a VPN? Or maybe my imagination is inhibited and I'll simply put down the crack pipe, clear my mind, and try to better follow along...

And i know that the VM is using the internet connection from the host.
But yes, as you guessed i want to run a VPN within a VPN. (Like i did the last 3 years )
It worked like that without a Problem for a long time. One minute to another it didnt work anymore.
P.S. i can run another expressvpn on the VM without a Problem.

Re: Internet connection on VM
I can visualize why one might want to deploy such a concoction, and don't now see why such wouldn't work, but WOW! Talk about getting in your own way by literally thinking outside the box! Anyway, that discussion is for another day...
I believe you'll best be served attempting a resolution through openvpn support. You may be experiencing an openvpn server configuration issue which changed recently...to prevent such.
Edit: Did you recently changed your connection server or any other configuration on expressvpn?

Re: Internet connection on VM
It sounded like the easy solution was to specify what dns servers to use in the setup of the VPN being used inside the virtual machine, otherwise you start getting into other configurations potentially in both VPNs and how the networking interface setup for the VM may factor into things.
I don't know VPN stuff at all and am new to this KVM/virt-manager stuff. Spent 2 weeks figuring out how to get the audio to work through pipewire and the usermode networking seems to work OK for what I do so have not dug into all the bridge, tap, and DNS stuff.

Re: Internet connection on VM
I believe you've just identified [you]r issue...the configuration of DNS on the host, vpn, vm, and vm vpn. The only change should've/could've been on the host machine, the rest pre-configured by vpn servers and virtual manager. Have fun! Been there, and regrettably done that!

Any Idea where these sudden changes could come from? My idea is that the problem lies at the expressvpn / DNS since it happens with a fresh installed system too and as i said i can use a second expressvpn on the vm without a problem.
What makes me really crazy here, is that a friend of mine uses the exact same setup (Debian10 on the host, Debian10 on the VM, Expressvpn on the host and nordvpn on the VM) What could trigger the issues on my system? Could it be the Hardware?
I mean a fresh Debian10 installation should always be the same? Or am i wrong here? If i dont figure out why this is happen, i will loose my sanity.

Re: Internet connection on VM
Again, your answers I believe will be found in company of users of the vpn software's. Clean slates are always a fun start when time is of NO concern, but really doesn't provide any true wisdom to the workings within our domain and how a couple clicks welcomed disruption unimagined. Wash, rinse, repeat seems to be my motto...and I couldn't begin to tell you how many times the good ol' nuke and pave was deployed, and always at the most inopportune times. D'oh!
Remember, good technicians don't lose their sanity, it simply becomes a normal state of mind as we step further outside of the stable. It's actually a wonder any of this stuff works when you innerstand the countless configurations from origination to termination... Hold on, the ride hasn't even started yet. Enjoy!

Unfortunately im not a technician, i just need that setup to work...
No clue where to start and where to end. And the only guy thats talking to me on the Internet is a philosopher
But thanks for your time. If u have any hints where and how i start to look for the DNS settings, please let me know.

Re: Internet connection on VM
New upcomings!
When i use tcp instead of udp to connect to nordvpn then i dont have any problems.
Does this still has something to do with the dns settings?
