Software for remote control of the GUI desktop

#1 Post by andy55 »

I have installed Debian on my parents' laptop. To provide better support ;-) I need to (from time to time) fix something in the desktop. Is there any (opensource) software which would let me take over the control of the desktop regardless of the desktop (KDE/XFCE/Gnome/other - ideally when they enable the remote control temporarily) ?

I will need to connect to their laptop through my_laptop -> my_wifi -> internet -> parents_wifi -> parents_laptop

I use teamviewer for times when I need to remote access other machines, it has worked well for me and is free to use for personal use.

But there were security concerns related to Teamviewer. Sorry but I am not going to use it.
Is there anything opensource ?

I don't mind ssh. This is actually the safest way to connect to remote server/desktop.
The only problem is to view the remote desktop so my parents and me can see the same desktop in case they are struggling (and I could help).

An alternative is X2go: see [1] and related packages.

My goto is x11vnc. You still have to be able to ssh into your parents PC however you like, usually via port forwarding on their router. running x11vnc in a terminal will create a temporary vncserver session of the current desktop. Open source and you are in total control of security.
