I found a what I think is a really interesting discussion regarding ESR-91 at
https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/20 ... 00242.html

One needs to click on the Follow-Ups to see the full discussion, but for me it is enlightening. It gives a good insight into what is going on with bringing Firefox-ESR 91 to Debian stable and some of the difficulties being encountered by the developers.

It truly increases my already high admiration for all those that dedicate their time to bring us the best Linux OS.

I just saw that Firefox-ESR 91.4.0 migrated to Testing on Dec. 13. Looks like the amazing Debian team is making good progress.

It's here in stable. This gives us at least several weeks of forum newbs not asking about the new Firefox ESR!

Thanks @canci. I had not checked for updates today. Update complete. Way to go team Debian.

Time to upgrade indeed. There are a number of other upgrades available today including a new 5.10 kernel and version upgrade to 11.2.

CVE-2021-38508 CVE-2021-38507 CVE-2021-38506 CVE-2021-38504
CVE-2021-38503

Multiple security issues have been found in the Mozilla Firefox
web browser, which could potentially result in the execution
of arbitrary code, information disclosure or spoofing.

Debian follows the extended support releases (ESR) of Firefox. Support
for the 78.x series has ended, so starting with this update we're now
following the 91.x releases.

Between 78.x and 91.x, Firefox has seen a number of feature updates. For
more information please refer to
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/9 ... easenotes/

For the oldstable distribution (buster) one more final toolchain update
is needed, updated packages will shortly be available as 91.4.1esr-1~deb10u1

For the stable distribution (bullseye), these problem have been fixed in
version 91.4.1esr-1~deb11u1.
Dammit, they had to mess with something for no reason except to break my usual workflow. Tab bar above toolbar? Why? :x Otherwise seems OK so far.

Wanted to come on to say Firefox-ESR has been now updated to 91.4 after updating, but it seems there is already a post here about it. Nice job Debian team.

Code: Select all

$ apt info firefox-esr
Package: firefox-esr
Version: 91.4.1esr-1~deb11u1

I guess you haven't seen the randomly popping up Mozilla VPN commercials yet. :lol:

Can't say I have seen anything like that. :|

To enable "legacy" CSS configs, you must enable - css - in Firefox, by typing about:config into your address bar, and search for toolkit.
When all the toolkit options appear change the one which says
toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets
to TRUE by click the icon in the right hand column.
Then close Firefox and reopen, and check how it looks
This will enable your - css - file to be read, and interpreted and accepted by the Firefox browser.
If you don't have one already, create a file userChrome.css in ~/.mozilla/fifefox/<profilename>/chrome/ and add the code. You may need to create the chrome folder too.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the unbearable annoyance of having tab bar above the other toolbars, it's easy to fix with a userChrome.css file as described in the top post here (don't read any other posts there):
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1339095
I changed the supplied

Code: Select all

--tab-min-height: 40px !important;
to

Code: Select all

--tab-min-height: 35px !important;
as 40px left a bit of wasted unused space. YMMV.

How to change dummy search box in New Tab page to restore old behaviour of a real search box:
Go to about:config and change

Code: Select all

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.improvesearch.handoffToAwesomebar
from true to false

Here's another tweak to reduce the padding in the Bookmarks menu toolbar dropdown. Add to your ~/.mozilla/firefox/<profilename>/chrome/userChrome.css file:

Code: Select all

/*** Tighten up drop-down/context/popup menu spacing (updated 9/8/2021) ***/

menupopup:not(.in-menulist) > menuitem,
menupopup:not(.in-menulist) > menu {
  padding-block: 2px !important;
  min-height: unset !important; /* v92.0 - for padding below 4px */
}
:root {
  --arrowpanel-menuitem-padding: 4px 8px !important;
}
Now you won't have to scroll (so much) to see all your bookmarks. 8) :wink:

sunrat, thanks for the tips. The first one that moves the tab bar down where it should be works on my esr78. (I'm still using Old Stable.) I had a userchrome.css some time ago which did the job but stopped working in one of my routine upgrades. I assumed that it was a version issue; did not know about toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets.

As to the bookmark menu drop down I move all my bookmarks to the menu bar and uncheck the bookmark bar. That puts all that stuff up top.

Ah yeah, that's shown in the Mozilla support article I linked above. I will edit to include it in the post. Don't want people to tweak their userChrome.css and have it not work.

Code: Select all

$ apt info firefox-esr
Package: firefox-esr
Version: 91.4.1esr-1~deb11u1
How is that possible? I want to upgrade but Debian Packages still shows 78.15.0esr-1~deb11u1 for Bullseye (stable):

https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/firefox-esr
https://packages.debian.org/search?sear ... irefox-esr

Querying

Code: Select all

apt info firefox-esr
also gives me this (and I have bullseye, bullseye-security and bullseye-updates in my sources.list):

Code: Select all

Package: firefox-esr
Version: 78.15.0esr-1~deb11u1

Hey, how do we close the thread in this forum? This is already on Debian stable. So we can close it.
