Hi,
After reading your post, ever-curious to try things, I looked at the site and did:

# apt install ffmpeg
# pip install ffsubsync
& can execute the program in terminal.
No idea how to use it though so will have to RTM.

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian!  rms would be proud.
