Desktop data loss after partition

#1 Post by debbie0513 »

I used KDE partition manager today for resizing disks.
I deleted the swap partition and moved the unallocated space to the left of my /home. No warning appeared

After reboot, all data on my /home is gone!! I only stored the desktop there but it is still painful

I tried testdisk but no related data was found. (No desktop directory under /home)
Any suggestion?

Sorry to hear of this. Reminds me of my own data disaster. I was advised to copy the lost partition to a another disk that is accessible and work on that to find data rather than risk messing up or damaging the original. In my case it was copied to a usb with dd. You could look at the extundelete program which works on ext3 and ext4 filesystems, specifically the journal in the partition. Sounds like you may have crossed a boundary into your /home dir which may have disrupted journal info. There are professionals who specialise in "undeletion" at a cost. I guess there's no better experience to stimulate thinking about backups.

Restore from the backup you made before you tried rearranging partitions.

From the manual:
4.1.
How dangerous is KDE Partition Manager for my data?
First of all, you should never perform any destructive operations (delete, move, resize) without first making a complete backup of everything affected.
Moving the start of a partition always comes with a risk of data loss, and like all such operations should not be contemplated without a backup. "No warning appeared" is no substitute for common sense.
Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action. Four times is Official GNOME Policy.

If the data was important do not use the disk and take it to a professional to try and get the data off the disk before any more writes to that disk.

A lesson hard learned. Don't play with partitions without first making a backup of your important data. Better yet, keep your data off the main system on a separate drive and backed up daily.

Yeah totally agree. A hard lesson learnt.
Won't go ease on backup from now on
