[Solved] Sound available intermittently from back panel speaker port
Re: Sound available intermittently from back panel speaker port
Another problem I've been having is random freezes. I installed the intel-microcode package and updated my bios but it didn't help. So with another tough, random problem I've decided to go to Ubuntu. I appreciate everybody taking a look at this. I may (probably will) see if the problems are solved when Bookworm becomes Stable. Thanks again!

Re: Sound available intermittently from back panel speaker port
Helllo,
Can you send the output of alsa-info.sh script generate in Ubuntu ?
It could be interesting to compare with the ones generated by Debian you already sent.
Thanks for the update.

Here you go. This was generated while playing a video. The sound was working.

Re: Sound available intermittently from back panel speaker port
Hello,
Thanks for the additional information.
I send (see attachments) the comparison (as a diff file) between the log generated by alsa-info.sh in the Ubuntu version you are using and the Debian version you sent before. The colorized version can be seen, for example, piping the output to the command:
Ubuntu loads more kernel modules related to audio then Debian, but it is difficult to understand if those additional modules are the culprits of your issue with Debian without further testing; for example:
* snd_pcm_dmaengine
I hope this can help other Debian users with the same issue.
Thanks for the additional information.

Re: Sound available intermittently from back panel speaker port
I'm back on Debian running the Backports kernel. I've been on Ubuntu for the last six months with no sound issues except for a few times. I've been on the 5.15 kernel. Ubuntu just updated the kernel to 5.19 and all of a sudden it started having sound issues similar to Debian's. But when I go back to the 5.15 kernel the sound works again.
The symptoms have changed a bit. The Gnome sound test usually works but sometimes doesn't. When I watch videos (YouTube and Vimeo) in either Firefox or Chromium the sound doesn't start but if I pause it for 30 to 45 seconds then play again the sound will usually come on. As before the front headphone jack doesn't seem to have any issues.
I was thinking about compiling the 5.15 kernel from kernel.org to test this theory out unless someone has a better idea. I downloaded the tar.xz file but ran into problems with verifying the signatures. So before launching into the whole thing I thought I'd mention it first in case someone had a better idea.

Hello,
Nice to hear from you after so long time.
A lot of reports are recently coming from users of sof drivers with intel hardware: see viewtopic.php?t=153813

Re: Sound available intermittently from back panel speaker port
Well the sound on the 5.15 LTS kernel appeared to be working fine.
Unfortunately now the 5.15 kernel won't boot saying I have to load the kernel first and something about a bad shim signature:
Loading Linux 5.15.94
Error: Bad shim signature
Loading initial ramdisk
Error: you need to load the kernel first
Unattended-upgrades ran this morning and deleted the 5.10 kernel so maybe that had something to do with that.

Never mind. I forgot that I had enabled secure boot in the bios. This was the problem. 5.15 boots fine now.Shamak wrote: ↑2023-02-19 14:37 ...Unfortunately now the 5.15 kernel won't boot saying I have to load the kernel first and something about a bad shim signature:

Since the sound works in 5.15 can something be learned from this?

Re: Sound available intermittently from back panel speaker port
Thanks. My system is not using the sof driver. It's using snd_hda_intel.Aki wrote: ↑2023-02-17 21:10 Hello,

Re: Sound available intermittently from back panel speaker port
Well the 6.1 kernel seems to have solved the issue. I installed the 6.1.8 kernel from Testing and it works fine. So it's just a matter of waiting for it to be updated in Backports.
Re: Sound available intermittently from back panel speaker port
Thanks to Aki for showing me how to do this by the way.
