Auto Power off

#1 Post by STUKguy »

Hi,

Please can someone help, i'm not sure where to start either. My knowledge of Debian/Linux is very limited but i have a VM of Debian which i just purely use to monitor other machines i have elsewhere but for some reason this VM turns keeps turning it self off. I have checked the power options and everything is disabled but still for some reason the machine turns it self off. I found this link https://linux.debian.user.narkive.com/T ... own-screen which had the command /etc/init.d/console-screen.sh but when i nano into it, its just a blank file.

Please can someone help me with this.

What virtualization software are you using ?
What Debian version are you using ?
What is the host's operating system ?

You can search for clues:
1) in the VM host's log (for example, the log of the specific VM) : in this log should be recorded information about host's VM crash, for example
2) in the log of the guest operating system (Debian): a controlled shutdown of the guest should have left traces, for example

@Head_on_a_Stick: of course, I have supposed it's not probably a clean shutdown/suspension/hibernation.

What virtualization software are you using ? - It is a KVM plug in for OMV, Open Media Vault, other then that i don't know much about it
What Debian version are you using ? Debian 11
What is the host's operating system ? The host is running OMV which is installed over Debian 11

1) in the VM host's log (for example, the log of the specific VM) : in this log should be recorded information about host's VM crash, for example - Looking at this i cant see anything that sticks out, but there is a hughe chuck of information missing as i got email at 6AM (UK time) to say the machine had gone offline but the log end the evening prior at 11:30PM.
2) in the log of the guest operating system (Debian): a controlled shutdown of the guest should have left traces, for example - I have found the location of the logs, what is the name of the log i need to look at? Syslog?

Well, the time you received the email could depend on the frequency (daily ?) scheduled for the host's VM check.

You can check the files in the /var/log/ directory [1]: the first ones could be /var/log/syslog and /var/log/kern for the specific time frame. You can also check the system journal [2][3] using the following command (where "start" and "stop" are date-time: e.g. "2012-10-30 18:17:16"):

Code: Select all

journalct --since start -until stop
