Backports service becoming official
===================================
The Debian Project is proud to announce that the backports service,
previously available at www.backports.org is now an official Debian
service and will be available from backports.debian.org
Backports are packages from the testing distribution recompiled for the
current stable (or even oldstable) to provide users of the stable
distribution with new versions of some packages, like the Linux kernel,
the Iceweasel browser or the OpenOffice.org suite, without sacrificing
the general stability of the system.
The archive currently has packages backported for the Lenny distribution
(how many?), but the infrastructure to accept packages for the upcoming
Squeeze release is already in place, to allow Debian Installer images to
configure the backports repository by default without generating errors
on user systems. The service for Squeeze will be enabled at a later
date, after the release.
Because of some limitations in the Debian Bug Tracking System, any bugs
relevant to backported packages still have to be reported to the
debian-backports list, which will now also move on lists.debian.org.
Scheduled Maintenance: We are aware of an issue with Google, AOL, and Yahoo services as email providers which are blocking new registrations. We are trying to fix the issue and we have several internal and external support tickets in process to resolve the issue. Please see: viewtopic.php?t=158230

Wonder how the packages are selected for backporting. For example, the GIMP was never added to backports, though even the latest 2.6.10 is a straightforward and simple backport.

Re: Backports service becoming official
So will there be separate main, contrib, non-free section in Backports now?

Re: Backports service becoming official
Could you provide the source of the announcement? I spent various minutes searching for it in the Debian's list but I had no luck.
I believe that new GNU/Linux users should use Stable because the development branches require administrative knowledge. Then comes Backports, which provides updates to packages which might not justify using a different branch by themselves but which are crucial to everyday users, like web browsers, instant messengers and music players. I've always used Testing but I am very happy that Backports is now an official service.

My first thoughts too. I will be making requests, and help when I have the time.stevepusser wrote:Wonder how the packages are selected for backporting.

Re: Backports service becoming official
There are backports from packages in the contrib and non-free sections, too. You might also want to purge the old keyring (1).

Awesome! I can be comfortable to commit Debian stable to a lot more new machines now. Debian Backports is a great feature.
