DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

Server admins had to reboot the Raspberry Pi that runs the forums.

I don't know what went wrong, but yes sometimes just a reboot solves it. Since it took a couple of days, I think it was some what more complicated, just guessing though.
There are several things that can cause this kind of error, one thing that can make it difficult is that when it occurs sometimes even the admins can not login, only someone with full access to the server and permissions . Since most people use a hosting service, and do not have full access , they need to contact the host, and a server admin/tech will fix it. If it is a dedicated server, and you are the admin, you should also know enough to be able to repair it, or if nothing else know how to find the solution using a search engine,... any way , I want to say thank you to the adminstration team, and whoever it was that fixed it, being the weekend, I am sure they also had other things , like family, etc... so all though I can not speak for others, I appreciate that some one took the time to work on it, and relatively quickly.

The spring must have wound down. I think it takes a while to dig the server out of the back of the cupboard and wind it up again

While not specifically listed, it might be related to this:

I was under the impression that this entire site and domain are not maintained by debian.org at all. Is this not true?
If this indeed is true, then you would not expect it to be listed there, right?
I am much more inclined to believe the theory that 4D696B65 had his RPi crash

"the theory that 4D696B65 had his RPi crash", Where does he say anything about a RPI crash, ????
Sunrat did mention "server admins" though, but 4D696B65 is not the server admin, he is the forum admin.

It is listed there though, https://www.debian.org/support

As far as I'm aware, this arrangement has persisted since.

It may be entirely unrelated to the storage system "event", or even hosted in a different part of the planet - I don't know.
It just seemed more than coincidental to me, that a large chunk of the debian infrastructure fell over at the same time as the forum.

We should probably be thankful that someone noticed ... ;)

Well, I can say you are welcome, but we still owe the thanks, that the person I contacted responded, and told me who to contact. I am not sure the storage storage system "event" was related or not either. I don't want to "pat myself on the back", but saying "We should probably be thankful that someone noticed ", made me happy,... when I noticed it was down, it was about 1 am, my time, and I went to bed, slept awhile, in the early morning it was still down, so I started searching debian.org, and I sent a e-mail to a person that is active with the web sites , development, etc. He suggested and gave me 3 e-mails, 2 did not respond, but 1 did and said they would look into it.
my real name. Thanks for the report. forums.debian.net is operated by a Debian

2nd e-mail I received:
my e-maiI: don't remember who it was that I contacted sometime back when
/forums.debian.net
was down, but if it was not you, perhaps you know who to contact ? The
forum is down again, maybe you all ready know, and sorry if this is a
bother.
==========
response:
I see you already got an answer about this from DSA.

According to LDAP these folks (CCed) are on the forums team:
So I contacted the 3 persons listed, and one responded:
Hi cuckoo,

Thanks for the email. I'm going to look more into it today. I've been busy, but I appreciate the urgency, and am hopeful I'll figure out what's gone wrong.

Sorry for the radio silence yesterday. Hoping to do better than that today!

Best,

Hello,

I see it is back up now, so just wanted to say thank you. What happened ? I am curious , if any of you have a chance to tell me.

Guess that is about it for now.

From cuckoo
No one ever did tell me what happened though, guess they are pretty busy, Any way, if they had noticed, no one told me, I suppose they also were very busy with the the storage system "event", I was not aware of that, until dilberts_left_nut mentioned it. Guess that is about it,...for now.
