I had a little plan to help out with something similar for me. I created a bare i686 (no 386 or 486) iso, which took up only around 100M, then I created a folder with around 300M of packages archived from apt to go along with it, and I also fit a USB boot image - also around 100M. I then wrote a shell script for apt to take care of everything. Talk about dependencies! All of it fit well within a Live CD - easily modded by isomaster, and I'm using a ~500M USB drive I got a long time ago. I must mention that this plan centers MOSTLY on non-GUI stuff though.

A small live debian completely customized for me.

Isn't Debian releasing live images for Squeeze?

Yep, there are, but I'd like to create my customized LIVE and the live-helper from squeeze has a BUG:
