I am trying to run Debian on a Pi 4 via USB. According to the documentation, it should work out of the box.
https://wiki.debian.org/RaspberryPiImages
I can't even use the keyboard. Nothing reacts. I tried daily and stable versions. The Pi itself should be updated to the latest EEPROM update. I made sure by updating it in Raspbian.
Here is a foto of the output

Re: Can't run Debian on Raspberry Pi4
Try this one https://raspi.debian.net/daily/raspi_4_bullseye.img.xz
How are you writing the img to your sd card?
I suggest using the Raspberry Imager or etcher. Either should work.

Re: Can't run Debian on Raspberry Pi4
It does work - as @craigevil mentioned, (or, https://raspi.debian.net/) there are specific images to use listed in this link.
I installed it over the last weekend and actually am running DWM on it. Basically, emulating my laptop install.
It's a tad slow and sound can be iffy depending on the apps you install but overall, I'm happy to have a 'puter for under 125.00

Re: Can't run Debian on Raspberry Pi4
Or you can just be lazy like I am.
I installed the Raspberry Pi arm64 beta, let it do its thing while booting.
Added the rpios bullseye repo, ran apt update, apt upgrade, let whatever needed to upgrade upgrade.
Now for the fun part I added Debian Sid and Experimental repos.
Did the usual update/upgrade thing.
Then ran sudo rpi-update.
Now I have Rspios arm 64 upgraded to Debian Sid, with a newer kernel and firmware.
I still get the benefit of an OS built for my PI, along with all the packages in the Debian repos.
I bought my PI400 in March, and I only had to reinstall the first couple of times I installed it, since then I have been puttering along.

Re: Can't run Debian on Raspberry Pi4
@craigevil I already tried Bullseye and it also doesn't work. The application I am trying to install also needs Buster. I am writing the image with Imager or Etcher. I also tried doing it manually with dd as mentioned in the documentation, but the results were the same. I cannot get it to boot up from an SSD. It only works from an SD card.

Re: Can't run Debian on Raspberry Pi4
I am brain dead. Use Etcher to Clone the sd card install that works to your SSD.
Since I am technically on RSPIOS I used the Sd Card Copier app to copy my system from a working sd card to my SSD.
Rebooted and poof it worked.
If that doesn't work, install raspberry pi os, let it update/upgrade. The reason behind this; the firmware may need upgraded which apt update/apt upgrade should take care of.

Re: Can't run Debian on Raspberry Pi4
I got the same errors as you displayed using an nvme housed in a case. I am going to try to repeat it but using the USB2 ports instead of the USB3 with the hopes that there may be something with the ports.coldspark29 wrote: ↑2021-07-29 10:22 @craigevil I already tried Bullseye and it also doesn't work. That being said, I doubt it will change anything but for now, the 128 gig sd is fine.

Tonights project, I'm going to follow what you did and just be done with it.
Thanks for the info @craigevil !!
