Re: installing debian bullseye on dell inspiron 5593
Single boot or dual boot?
Is the SSD connected correctly?
Did you check the ISO before you put it into the USB stick?
What installation version did you use and where from?

I would like to install dual boot. The iso used (and verified) is the RC2 amd 64 bullseye image with firmware for netinstall
Re: installing debian bullseye on dell inspiron 5593
The ssd should be connected correctly, as I can use my windows installation normally
Re: installing debian bullseye on dell inspiron 5593
it's a NVMe SSD. However, I don't know how to lspci from the netinstall image. I could use a live distro in order to do that, but it wouldn't of course be significant for the debian installation.

Does the BIOS recognize it as NVMe?

Switch to tty2 (Ctrl+Alt+F2) or tty3 (Ctrl+Alt+F3) to get a shell.mzrk07 wrote:how to lspci from the netinstall image
Of course it would. lspci ouput is hardware dependent and is the same on all systems.mzrk07 wrote:I could use a live distro in order to do that, but it wouldn't of course be significant for the debian installation.
I have seen two different cases when a NVMe SSD does not appear as /dev/nvme* :
1) The SATA controller is set to RAID (or other proprietary mode) instead of AHCI in the BIOS/UEFI settings. Sometimes the setting is well hidden. lspci does not show the SSD.
2) lspci shows the SSD but dmesg shows errors from the nvme driver. Passing specific parameter values to the nvme-core kernel module may work around the issue (usually default_ps_max_latency_us=0).
Re: installing debian bullseye on dell inspiron 5593
going on the BIOS I found that my SSD is actually identified as SATA. Since this is the most likely issue, are there any workarounds to solve it?
Thank you for helping!

Are you sure it's NVMe and not SATA? All of my SSDs are SATA, even the M2 one.

Re: installing debian bullseye on dell inspiron 5593
The M.2 form factor is not to be confused with the interface type which can be NVMe or SATA (or more rarely AHCI).
With the SSD model number, we could check whether its interface type is NVMe or SATA.

The hard drive is a kbg40zns512g nvme kioxia 512gb.
Re: installing debian bullseye on dell inspiron 5593
digging in the bios I found that the ssd is actually set on raid. Changing the setting to ahci sends me enormous warning signs. Is raid compatible with debian somehow or is it strictly necessary to change this setting? Thank you very much for your help!
Re: installing debian bullseye on dell inspiron 5593
UPDATE: I changed the setting from RAID to AHCI following this guide.

Tomorrow I'll try again with debian and see what happens

Re: installing debian bullseye on dell inspiron 5593
NVMe manangement in proprietary RAID mode is not supported by the Linux kernel in general.
If lspci does not show the NVMe SSD, then it is necessary to disable RAID mode.
Re: installing debian bullseye on dell inspiron 5593
changing from raid to ahci actually worked. Thank you very much!
