Finished clean Debian install and... nothing!? Double disks/OS, BIOS not UEFI [SOLVED]

#1 Post by jazbar »

After 3 days of intensive study of Debian installation how to make partition and how to verify ISO installation image, my installation was a bust.
I found that IT and Linux communities were of lack of information about 2 disks and 2 OS installation. My self is such a case.

First I installed Win.8.1 on SSD, than divide a HDD via Gparted Live (USB) on 4 partitions: [fat32]1GB, [ex4/root]45GB, [[swap]6GB, [ntfs/win+debian storage] extended]182GB. Than made Debian Xfce installation with verified ISO in [ex4/root B K]45GB partition. Before I made BIOS setting bootable CD and HDD (SATA-1).

At the end of installation I was asked where to install the GRUB: 1. SSD/SATA-0 with windows OS, 2. HDD/SATA-1 with newly Debian or 3. others (Floppy disk). I chose HDD with not yet finished installation of Debian OS.

After Debian installation was finished the following message appeared on the monitor:
Error:file '/boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod' not found
Entering resume mode...
grub rescue>

What should I do? Disconnect SATA-0 cable from SSD and reinstall Debian clean installation, as in my PC is only one HDD?
Is my partitions arranged OK? Maybe I should add one partition more ex2 specially for GRUB bootloader?

This is an error from GRUB's core image.
Can you post the output of the following commands at the GRUB rescue prompt ?

Code: Select all

ls
ls /
echo $cmdpath
echo $prefix

Which "live" app with the terminal should I download for easiest work? The GRUB or Debian or something else?

Just boot the HDD and type the commands at the prompt.

No effect.
For me is easiest and faster just to make clean reinstall. So should I disconect SATA cable from SSD and make reinstallation on HDD?

Posting a link without an explanation is not very polite.

I usually place the windows on sata1. To verify, place your windows ssd on sata1 and make sure it boots ok.
If that checks out, proceed under the assumption windows will ignore a foreign disk on sata0, once it exist.
Set the bios for sata0, your hard drive, with CD boot, and install Debian. I would leave the windows disk not connected, because that's for sure...
After Debian is installed and working, add the windows drive on sata1, leave the bios on sata0, boot into debian and update grub with a functioning os-prober, and you should be all set to boot windows from grub.
Always worked for me.

I asked you to post the output of the commands, not to describe it.
Also, it appears that 'echo' is not available in rescue mode, sot use 'set' instead.

Code: Select all

ls
ls /
set

The output of

Code: Select all

ls
ls /
is still missing.
Why is it so hard for you to understand I do not want a vague useless decription but the full complete exact output ?

you could poke around and find the config file, grub is confused...

Code: Select all

grub rescue> configfile /grub/grub.cfg
ENTER
..if this simple line gets you into the install,

Code: Select all

#dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
follow the prompt...

Code: Select all

#update-grub
lots of variation in 'rescue grub>' to get to 'grub>'
sort the files, find and load a kernel, unlock slots, etc...

Code: Select all

grub rescue> set prefix=(hdX,X)/boot/grub
grub rescue> set root=(hdX,X)
grub rescue> insmod normal
grub rescue> normal
grub rescue> insmod linux
grub rescue> linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.15.0-666-generic root=/dev/sdX1
grub> initrd /boot/vmlinuz-5.15.0-666-generic
>boot
...something along those lines. Good Luck

I have a filling that Debian installation have a bug - fixed code that GRUB can be installed only on primary disk (hd0). As soon there is 2 or more physical disks like in my case and during installation is chosen secondary (hd1) or other disk than (hd0) to place installation, GRUB is not correctly installed. viewtopic.php?p=740773#p740773

What if I try to find where the grub config file is, in a manner to find the virtual partition ex2?
