1) first (always) say something positive

being a big fan of Debian since aprox 10 years

thanks for all your efforts making Debian a easy to install (universal) reliable system, that lowers the bar for users trying to go Open Source and GNU Linux and FreeSoftware (a migration via OSX might be a good transition from Windows)

today was the day trying out the new Debian 11 with LTS (LTS is a reason for users consider switching to Ubuntu, so good choice there)

2) the problems:

E1: (error1) problem: Debian 11 won't install

tested on:

- hp server g6 proliant (amd64)
and
- x60s laptop (i386)

observed problem:

- network aka "the internet" (like ping 1.1.1.1) works at the beginning

then it loses network connection (on all nics even wifi)

and setup will fail before "software selection" screen with screenshots that can be seen here

pwd: DebuggingDebian11

https://dwaves.de/2021/08/17/gnu-linux- ... 1-testing/

got ISOs from here https://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/debian-cd/11.0.0/

did the sha512sum -c on all downloaded isos (so it ain't a download corruption problem)

S1: (suggestion1) there needs to be an easy way to report errors

S.1.) include a "report problem" button, that automatic generates a report to store away any error logs (and dmesg) that is generated during the setup on a usb drive, for easy upload to https://debian.org/report-a-problem

or:

S2.) (even better if network works) include a "report problem" button, that automatic generates a report and uploads it to debian.org for further investigation (easily accessible as a link like https://debian.org/errors/report/2021-0 ... 6351782539)

Q1: (question1): why is there nor vi nor less included in the setup?

makes debugging things very very hard

please checkout this wonderful script that should run on some console during setup per default

https://dwaves.de/2017/06/15/linux-moni ... er-varlog/

which would display all errors (currently via ccze) nicely in RED

for easy visual detection of problems

PS: thanks for rss feed btw https://www.debian.org/News/news its nice and easy to use rss apps to stay up to date on Debian's development.

Hello,

"strange" things are going on

retried today with firmware-11.0.0-amd64-i386-netinst.iso

from: https://get.debian.org/images/unofficia ... ch/iso-cd/

imho the problem seems to be this mirror host https://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/

using the default Debian mirror works :)

but then again on a different machine with Debian 10

today the default Debian package repo: ftp.de.debian.org (141.76.2.4)

was not reachable through Starlink <-> partnering-with-Google-for-ground-networks <-> ftp.de.debian.org (141.76.2.4)
(yes Elon is partnering with Google! https://cloud.google.com/press-releases ... ogle-cloud to build the ultimate SKYNET!?)

Code: Select all

apt update
Get:1 https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt xenial InRelease [2,316 B]
Hit:2 https://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/debian buster InRelease
0% [Connecting to ftp.de.debian.org (141.76.2.4)]

commenting it out in /etc/apt/sources.list

was able to proceed with installing updates/upgrades

but then again...

check out this screenrecording... that does not make sense.... that suddenly the ping to 1.1.1.1 does not work anymore...

is maybe some Google DDoS firewall the problem?

checkout this screen recording: when initial the ping to 1.1.1.1 (CloudFlareDNS) works... and then stops working after downloading a few packages.... wtf seriously? X-D

GoodDay Mates,

network connectivity dropping during package download is still there, it is a major problem, sometimes it works, sometimes not, this used to work very well.

it will especially annoy new users, so this issue need to be debugged & fixed!

will also write to SpaceX about it (if it has anything to do with their setup)

the free version iso seems to have have a network problem during package download: (after software selection)

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu ... 64/iso-cd/

on Lenovo t440

and the problem is still there... this time it downloaded 1388 packages of 1491 before grinding to a halt...
  • after software selection (wanted to try the KDE Desktop, being big MATE fan for it's simplicity) from the default debian package mirror https://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/
  • it just stops downloading packages after frew hunderd packages (loses connectivity) and stays there until timeout
  • downloading isos via wget from just works fine

Code: Select all

time wget https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/current/amd64/iso-cd/debian-11.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso

2021-09-23 11:50:41 (7.53 MB/s) - ‘debian-11.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso.2’ saved [395313152/395313152]

is your dns reliable? Have you tried another? or checked for "CloudFlareDNS problem" on interwebz?
https://html.duckduckgo.com/html/?q=Clo ... NS+problem

found this searching, "mirror does not support the specified release bullseye"
https://html.duckduckgo.com/html/?q=mir ... e+bullseye

[SOLVED] Re: mirror does not support the specified release (jessie)

Setup can't do anything if your network is unreliable. I haven't seen this widely reported, but I didn't check bug reports. Thanks for taking the time to track down the problem.

Re: Debian 11 Bullseye Setup Problems Error Report

workaround:

1) download the larger DVD iso

https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu ... 4/iso-dvd/

(or even the blueray version https://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/cu ... 64/iso-bd/)

2) 1:1 dd to usb stick

3) install without network mirror

4) then after setup complete, install all other packages like the beloved:

Code: Select all

apt update;
apt install mate-desktop-environment-extras;
apt install lightdm; # to get a full working desktop
if the network manager is still missing:

Code: Select all

apt update;
apt install network-manager-gnome
thanks! :)

yes there is the possibility indeed it could be possible, that during package downloads, the wifi signal gets bad... then good again... and somehow the download process of the packages comes to a grinding halt X-D had no time yet to test with different uplink

but then: it works in virtualbox? X-D

imho: what would be nice, that it then fails with something like: "could not download package x because lost connectivity... "

or even better: just tries to restart networking or at least re-download that package

fun fact: the (analog) VGA out of that machine NVIDIA GF108M NVS 5400M works fine after setup Debian 11, but the (digital) causes trouble / problematic ("no monitor detected")

F**** Y*** NVIDIA!

Fn + F7 is the key to switch between monitors... but it says, that it is the only (internal) display in town

just wanted to let all know: the same problem, is still there in 11.2

#wtf

it will hinder a lot of users to adpot debian, because all they can do is

1) do a minial setup

2) pray that networking will work after minimal setup

3) be bash savvy enough to get networking going

vi edit /etc/apt/sources.list

# to add:

Code: Select all

deb https://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/debian/ buster main contrib
deb-src https://ftp.halifax.rwth-aachen.de/debian/ buster main contrib
4) apt update

5) install stuff from there

Code: Select all

apt update;
apt install mate-desktop-environment-extras lightdm network-manager-gnome libreoffice firefox-esr

Hello,

This will probably sound a bit stupid/crazy, but this might just be an issue with the GUI installer.

This also just happened to me a few moments ago, and then I decided to retry, and went to the text installer. It worked without any issues, didn't fail to install any package.

My tests were in virtualbox, on Windows (performed 2 of them: one with NAT and one with a bridge to my WiFi adapter). They both worked fine with the text installer.

thanks for the info...

yeah there is something networky going wrong in the graphical setup installer.

(dropping connection for no reason)

realized: that the non-gui installer also does disk partitioning differently (imho better :)
