dummy output in sound settings

#1 Post by wbravin »

hello all

first i would like to apologise for my ignorance

i ma new to the debian and in general linux world and to boot i am very old and never been exposed to coding.

I have an HP elitbook 217p on which i decided to run home assistant (ha). the ha community directed me to install ha supervised in docker on a debian os.

i did install all this and it is almost is running well.

I only use the laptop to host ha and to access youtube videos to learn how to configure debian and ha

when i go to launch google chrome to watch a youtube video i get the image buffering and after a while youtube suggest to restart the program. I do to no avail so i go to the forums and there i see recommendations to uninstall chrome and re install it
i do this now the videos play but i have no sound

i open sound setting and i see that i am only offered a dummy output option
again i go to the forums and not they suggest that i need to install alsa and pulseaudio (which i do). now i have sound but the youtube videos do not play anymore.

I fix this and now i get again the dummy output for sound option

I ran the following
"""""
$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 0: Generic Analog [Generic Analog]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: PCH [HDA Intel PCH], device 3: Generic Digital [Generic Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
""""

and
""""
sudo apt -y install alsa-tools-gui alsa-tools alsa-utils alsa-firmware-loaders alsamixergui alsaplayer oss-compat apulse ffmpeg ffmpegthumbnailer libdvdcss2 libdvdread8 abcde id3v2 asunder wavpack flac flake lame pnmixer
""""
to no avail

what am i missing? what do i need to do

thank you in advance for any help

Your sound card is not being recognised. Please post output of:

Code: Select all

# dmesg | grep 'snd\|PCH\|audio\|firmware'
The package Timidity is known to bork up sound, so check if it is installed.

Code: Select all

# dpkg -s timidity

hello

thank you

i cut and pasted these 2 lines of code and rebooted the pc.

it did not change the situation.

i also inserted the following earlier today and it seemed to work

""""""sudo apt -y install alsa-tools-gui alsa-tools alsa-utils alsa-firmware-loaders alsamixergui alsaplayer oss-compat apulse ffmpeg ffmpegthumbnailer libdvdcss2 libdvdread8 abcde id3v2 asunder wavpack flac flake lame pnmixer"""""

and rebooted the machine
i inserted the code you mentioned (as is) in the terminal and when i hit return nothing happened (it returned to the prompt) and i got the dummy.

as i do not know what this all means should i use your code with sudo at the start at the start?

at the moment it is working

once again thank you for taking time from your weekend to help me. Hope you get to enjoy the rest of the weekend

# means you need to be root. Enter the command that follows, or sudo plus command from the user prompt. You probably typed the # which negates the command.

Buffering has nothing to do with the title of the thread and could be down to your internet connection. As you have not posted the output requested, I can't say anything more. Hope the pizza was good.

Hi Thank you for your response

I do not think that the buffering is caused by the wan connection for the following reasons
i performed a speed test all all was fine
if i try the same video on a windows pc (connected to the same switch) i do not get this issue
and if it were a network issue the buffering would eventually stop. Instead i get " if playback does not start shortly please restart your device

Make sure you have the non-free repository enabled and install

Code: Select all

firmware-iwlwifi
https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi

As you have reinstalled sound packages, please run

Code: Select all

$ aplay -l
Again and post the output.

It looks like the dummy sound issue is caused by Home Assistant, and they have an add on to release sound back to other applications when Home Assistant is not using sound.

Thank you very much
@FreewheelinFrank

I do not understand why HA would cause such an issue. o well i did follow the link's instruction and it worked. thank you
FYI

i did fix this issue several times during the past 3 weeks however every time i needed to reboot the pc the issue re appeared. go figure

but for now it works

Will the almond plugin cause any issues with the audio?

thank you very much

Home Assistant grabs audio and doesn't release it, just like Timidity, which causes similar issues, which is why I suggested you check for it.

The plugin tells HA to release audio when it is idle, as far as I can see.

thank you for the lesson it was very helpful and gave me insight on the possible integration. As i do not like alexa siri or google I was hopping to use almond for my voice assistant. Now i will proceed more cautiously

thank you

Hello all

My laptop with debian 11 and home assistant have been working flawlously

I never used it for anything else No changes done to it except for the occasional reboot required by home assistant or power outage

my main laptop died 2 weeks ago and the backup in in the shop for repair.

Hence i'm left with this pc to continue some learning, guidance from youtube ot forums and email.

How ever now i still seee a dummy output device in my sound menu

what may have gone wrong

I tried to pair it to echo it pairs but no sound comes from it

Thank you for your patience
