update 7.3 Wheezy in Oct 2021

#1 Post by JosBRik »

I want to make a mirror of my server, which has operated since Dec2013 without any problem.
Before I do that, I think it is wise to update/ upgrade Wheezy.

A flawless functioning of the system is essential for the POS system in my Petshop based on LAMP. That´s the only main function of the system. So I do not think it makes sense to to upgrade to later versions Jessie etc.

Here is some further information:
Version Debian
01Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 7.3 (wheezy)
Release: 7.3
Codename: wheezy

Content of sources.list
deb http://archive.debian.org/debian wheezy main contrib non-free
deb http://archive.debian.org/debian-security wheezy/updates main

result of apt-get update:

Get:1 http://archive.debian.org wheezy Release.gpg [2373 B]
Get:2 http://archive.debian.org wheezy/updates Release.gpg [1601 B]

I am worried about the GPG errors at the end of the output.

I have following questions:
-is it wise to update/ upgrade Wheezy or should I not clean this ever running machine?
-What are the consequences for LAMP?
-How can I repair the GPG Errors signatures were invalid:….etc.

Thank you for considering this post and for replying.

Debian Wheezy was last updated in 2016 and stopped receiving security updates in 2018. It is normal that the keys have expired.

I believe POS of sale means point of sale and refers to recording transactions from cash registers.

If this system is entirely internal, then it might be OK to keep it.

Of course, if there is any kind of internet access, or access to the system by external devices or untrusted people, this system will have security vulnerabilities that could allow it to be compromised, and you would be well advised to update to a version of Debian that is still supported.

Thank you for your reply,
Your understanding of POS is the right one.
The system is entirely internal.
How can I update my 7.3 version to the latest update and security updates?
Is there a way to work around or repair the expired keys?

The latest info from Debian is here: https://wiki.debian.org/DebianWheezy#Re ... nd_updates
I applied these recommendations. See my sources.list

Older releases are kept in separate archive repositories. Try updating from there. You will have to move release by release, I.e. first from 7 to latest 7.x, then 8, then 9 etc.

I'd personally just do a clean install.

Even if you upgrade safely from Wheezy to a more modern system, there might have been so many changes to the system that complex stuff like LAMP might have configuration problems.
At my work, we let a company do the POS updates for us. Wouldn't it be a better option to just outsource that or at least have them do a clean install of a supported version for a fee?

Canci...thanks for your reply.
I only want to upgrade within Wheezy and do not want to touch the POS system.
How should I change my sources.list the make use of the link you have submitted: https://www.debian.org/distrib/archive
the readme file in http://archive.debian.org/debian/ says:

If you are using APT the relevent sources.list entries are like:
deb http://archive.debian.org/debian/ $RELEASE main contrib
for example:
deb http://archive.debian.org/debian/ sarge main contrib

So deb http://archive.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib ??

If I put
deb http://archive.debian.org/debian/ wheezy main contrib
into my sources.list
as only working line
and enter
apt-get update
then the output is:
Get:1 http://archive.debian.org wheezy Release.gpg [2373 B]
Hit http://archive.debian.org wheezy Release
Ign http://archive.debian.org wheezy Release
Ign http://archive.debian.org wheezy/main amd64 Packages/DiffIndex
Ign http://archive.debian.org wheezy/contrib amd64 Packages/DiffIndex

Hit http://archive.debian.org wheezy/main Translation-en
Hit http://archive.debian.org wheezy/main amd64 Packages
Hit http://archive.debian.org wheezy/contrib amd64 Packages

Again: invalid signatures. How to solve this?
and I am not sure if these are the updates I need.

I appreciate any help.

Try ignoring the keys:

Code: Select all

apt-get --allow-unauthenticated update
apt-get --allow-unauthenticated dist-upgrade
Image Stable / Asus VivoBook X421DA / AMD Ryzen 7 3700U / Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx (Picasso) / 8 GB RAM / 512GB NVMe

If it is working perfectly and you never go on the internet with it, I see no point in updating at all. Would be different if you need a new system with newer versions of your POS software.

I consider update from archives as too risky. So no cleaning of this running machine.
Thanks for all the replies and advice.
