[SOLVED] [ARM] Upgrade Debian 9 to 10/11?

#1 Post by littlebigman »

Hello,

I'm using an ARM-based appliance* that's currently running Debian 9. I'm told support will end in 2022, I notice the latest Samba package in the repo (4.5.16) is several versions behind (4.15.1), and Windows10 doesn't see the Samba shares.

So… before solving that Samba issue, I'm thinking of upgrading to either Debian 10 or 11. I've never performed a major upgrade of the OS itself. Before going ahead, I'd like to check 10/11 is actually available for that hardware, and upgrade won't hose the appliance.

Thank you.

* 1.2 GHz Marvell Kirkwood 6281 ARM-compatible CPU, a.k.a. Feroceon (88FR131 rev 1 (v5l)); architecture = armv5tel

Regardless of whether Debian 10/11 supports your device, there's always a non-zero chance that something bad will happen during the upgrade, or that one of the software you depend on doesn't work the way you expect in the new version, or...
You see where I'm going. Backup first.
In an ideal world, your appliance's rootfs is on an SD card. Clone it to a new one, and do the upgrade on the copy.

I would suggest only upgrading one version at a time, and taking the time to read the (exhaustive) release notes and installations procedures. These are the Debian 10 links, for 11, replace oldstable by stable

Good luck!

It's only now that I check your link, and notice that it's a SheevaPlug you're talking about.
Those generated a fair amount of enthusiasm at the time, and were well supported.
A quick google search found https://www.cyrius.com/debian/kirkwood/ ... g/install/ which confirms that Debian 10, at least, supports it.

Given that the armel port is still official (https://www.debian.org/ports/arm/) and still mention "plug" computers, I'm quite confident you'll be able to upgrade to 11. But my backup recommendation still stands :lol:
