Upgrade to Debian 11 from fully encrypted Debian 10

#1 Post by Uhuru »

Hello everybody!

I had recently encrypted, boot included, my Debian 10 (Buster) following this page instructions: https://cryptsetup-team.pages.debian.ne ... -boot.html

However, I, now, would like to upgrade the system to Debian 11 (Bullseye) following instructions found here: https://www.linuxtechi.com/how-to-upgra ... debian-11/, or there: https://www.tecmint.com/upgrade-debian-10-to-debian-11/

Can I perform the upgrade on the encrypted system, or should I decrypt the system beforehand, like this page: https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... -partition, seems to sugest typing "cryptsetup open /dev/sda2 somename --type luks" ?

Maybe I'm missing something, but why would you need to decrypt anything if you already opened it when you booted up? The latter stackexchange link you posted is about someone using debian installer to reinstall, not upgrade.

It's probably best to follow the section on upgrades here in the release notes.

Good luck

Quite aside from the encryption, make a good backup on separate media before doing the upgrade. If you upgrade goes south you will be glad to have the backup.

I'm so late to post a reply and I apologise for this.
Thanks for the above replies. I will try those and see if everything goes well! It has to!
