Install Debian on Gigabyte B550 AM4 AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

#1 Post by Niemand »

I want to install Debian on my Gigabyte B550 AM4 AMD Ryzen 5 5600X. It's a windows 11 device and windows 11 is installed on a Western Digital WD Blue SN550 NVMe M.2 2280 1TB.

I have two identical Seagate 500 gig SATA drives configured in a RAID 1 configuration setup by Gigabyte RAIDXpert2 for RAID under Windows 11.

I want to create a dual boot PC. I'm trying to figure out how to install Debian on those two 500 gig Seagate in a raid 1 mode. I have burned a Debian install disk and booted upon it. But the install never sees the two Seagate drives. Looking for a little guidance.

Windows software RAID is incompatible with Linux. So a dual boot is impossible here.
I suggest you use virtualization. That is: install Debian as host OS and Windows virtual. Never the other way around!

Ok, let's forget about windows for now. What if I was wanting to install debian on the two Seagate 500 gig SATA drives in a fresh install and have the two setup in a raid environment. As if I just built a new PC and I'm going to use debian.

Why?
Do yourself a favor and get a little ssd as the OS boot drive, Debian will fit on the smallest one you find.

Well, one might ask that question and the reason is maybe I'm 66 and retired with time on my hands. I want to checkout Linux again. Haven't toyed with it in about 20 years. Back then I created a dual boot with Windows and Linux. As an update, I can now see the two Seagate drives during Debian install from the DVD install disk. I had to remove RAID at bios level.

And I already have a 1TB SSD running Windows 11.

I usually shrink the partition in Windows by however much you want to devote to Debian (I currently have 100Gb of my 1TB ssd) and then install to that space.
I'm sure your m-board is UEFI and this means you can have your bootloader (grub usually) separate from the Windows bootloader (unlike the old MBR way of overwriting it), meaning if you later want to remove Debian you can set boot order for "Windows first" and then remove the Debian partitions and then in windows you could expand your partition again to recover the free space.

This way you could leave your raid in place so long as you don't need to access the data in Linux too, otherwise the previous advice on raids would come into play.
