In order to get the kernel module working I had to copy the relevant microcode obtained from the linux kernel git page to /lib/firmware/i915 since the microcode from the debian non-free repository is outdated. After that I expected GPU acceleration to work. Unfortunately that is not the case, although the errors in dmesg dissapeared.

When running glxinfo the graphical setup is reported as not accelerated:

you forgot to post the Xorg.0.log
The graphics is controlled by the i915 kernel module:

Code: Select all

$ sudo lspci -vk
.....
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Device 46b3 (rev 0c) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
...
Why edit the results? lspci -vk gives a lot of info about your system, don't trim things if you want good help. It looks like atroll post when you do that. Show all the evidence.
I had to copy the relevant microcode obtained from the linux kernel git page to /lib/firmware/i915 since the microcode from the debian non-free repository is outdated
...
although the errors in dmesg dissapeared.
Bullcrap, firmware and microcode are two different things, is this a troll post? or do you not understand the difference? Show exactly what you copied from where to where. When looking into firmware issues, dmesg is often helpful. You mention errors but didn't post any of it? wtf?
I am looking for directions to solve this problem

You're running kernel 5.18 from backports - you should have installed the firmware from backports as well. Then reboot...

grep dmesg for "firmware" to see if that provides any clues.

Well that's interesting - the firmware for the 5.18 backports kernel doesn't actually seem to be in the Debian repositories. The 5.18 kernel is also roughly two months behind the upstream stable kernel. https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/linux

Looking at your dmesg output, the correct firmware is being loaded. However, you're relying on a pre-built kernel from backports - and you're running very new hardware. In your position, I would remove the backports kernel and build the latest stable kernel from source and see if that resolves it.

DRM support is provided by Mesa rather than the kernel. The OP could try MX Linux and their backported Mesa stack or perhaps even try those packages in Debian.

I would just use Arch.

You're right - incidentally DRM support is also in the kernel (and the firmware is usually required for acceleration) and libdrm is the user space side of it. In my experience, you need to consider all components (kernel, firmware, mesa/drm) before you can get working DRI acceleration - so yes, that's likely why the newer kernel and firmware are resulting in llvmpipe being used - and there's going to be quite some work needed.

Seems like a lost cause. I've done backports of kernel, mesa, drm, etc years ago and gotten good results - but nowadays, I find that users have no appetite for it.

Ah that old "solution". Oh well...

If I opt to go that route (undecided yet), which packages should be replaced?

Code: Select all

libegl-mesa0
libgl1-mesa-dri
libgl1-mesa-glx
libglapi-mesa
libglu1-mesa
libglx-mesa0
mesa-utils
mesa-va-drivers
mesa-vdpau-drivers
mesa-vulkan-drivers
libdrm-amdgpu1
libdrm-common
libdrm-intel1
libdrm-nouveau2
libdrm-radeon1
libdrm2
libva-drm2
besides those mentioned above?

I had similar issue with Ubuntu 22.04. After manually recompiling and installing kernel 5.18, the problem got resolved. However, not being fan of Ubuntu, I ended up moving to Debian testing brunch, that comes with 5.18. If you prefer to stay on your current brunch, manually compiling kernel 5.18 could be good choice.

I went ahead and installed some newer mesa/libdrm packages from mxlinux. They had a dependency on several llvm packages, which had to be installed first. All seems to work fine now. Glxinfo now reports:

Just the .deb packages? If you add the repositories without pinning custom systemd & GRUB packages will be pulled in when the system is upgraded because MX add an epoch to their versions.

Yes, as the guy that backported the latest MX AHS packages in June from Debian testing, the first thing I do is backport the newer llvm compiler toolchain from there (llvm-14 at the time), which takes several hours on a reasonably powerful gaming laptop for the amd64 architecture, and then additional hours for the i386 platform. We only have AHS as a amd64 ISO, but you need matching i386 Mesa packages if you want to run something like Steam on amd64.

Building the rest of the packages like a newer libdrm, libva-dev, and then Mesa takes only a small fraction of the time that llvm does.

We also ported over a newer set of firmware from Ubuntu Kinetic that currently is only a few weeks out of date, compared to Debian Sid's year-old packages.

Yes, added them all manually through dpkg -i.

Luckily I have enough common sense to not do such dangerous things.

Why don't you use those on https://apt.llvm.org/ ? They even seem to have backports for llvm14 for debian stretch.
