Fvwm3 package

#1 Post by rasat »

The new Fvwm3 has been released two years ago, for some reason, there is no Debian package. Is this the right place to ask to get it added?

If you are new to FVWM, it is a Window Manager (WM). It is also a Virtual window manager which allows you to place windows on an area much larger than the actual size of the visible display. Extremely customizable and extendible while consuming a relatively small amount of resources. For example, if you merge the Fvwm extensions (configs) with XFCE or LXDE, the amount of resources is lower than the original DE and adds an endless number of new features and functionalities. Why not an Fvwm3 package?

Thanks.
The wish is one year old. How many wishes are required to get the package or do we have to wait for the Xmas? :)

One could compile the Github version if one wishes and is able.

If I understand well how Debian works, it above all takes a willing maintainer. It's a matter of dedication and motivation, anyone with sufficient competence can apply.

There are none besides MX Linux (test repo). In general, apps will have to get started upstream before others will follow. Fvwm2 still does a good job but duplicates the resources and is not designed for dual monitors.

fvwm3 is in many distros. Heck I have it installed on my Slackware box!

I used Debian as my main distro for 12 years and only had to compile one kernel and perhaps 3 packages because I never needed to because most needed packages are available in main.

That shows how much of an unusual occurrence it is that it's missing from Debian as quality software is usually always available in main.

The only other reason is popularity. This shows the downside of the popularity contest. Nowadays Most people want software that is per-configured and have no time or wish to make their own working environment. IMO this is the path to software slavery no matter what floss license. As another example I use fittstool as my launcher. It's a fantastic light and easy to configure piece of software but you won't find it in any mainstream distro.

When I switched to Dragora there were many missing packages and if you wanted them you had to build them. This was a rather big wake up call for me. If I couldn't build it from source or trust the people that built it from source for what ever reason I didn't install it. Hence I had to learn to build from source. A most liberating experience.

fvwm3 is stable. The code quality is good. I say this after lurking is their irc channel for many years. Not that I can read code but I can observe good practice and that was seen in abundance.

fvwm3 is the WM I would take with me if I were doing "desert island discs" because it's powerful enough to be anything you want if you spend the time learning how to set it up. On my install it uses 25MB under ps_mem.py I don't need the flexibility for my system so even when slim downed, it's a bit heavy.

That said I'd accept that what I'd consider heavy for me is maybe thought light for many. Well documented, well coded, and not bonkers. The bottom line is if you know what you want and can't find it fvwm3 can be it if you're prepared to spend the time and rtfm.

Someone should stick it in backports.

Rasat is asking about the latest 1.0.4 release, which I've built for the test MX repo using the last release from github.

It seems that it's been orphaned in Debian, stopping at fvwm2 2.6.8 years ago: https://packages.debian.org/search?sear ... words=fvwm

Good to know that Debian has added 1.0.5 to the sid repo.

And rasat asked me to backport it for the MX test repos, which I did for the MX 19 Buster base and 21 Bullseye: http://mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/pool/test/f/fvwm3/

Hello.

I found a much easier way to install this wonderful window manager (fvwm3) on a Debian 11 system.

My method does not require subordinating any 3rd party repositories.

Just go to this link https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/fvwm3

And follow instructions to build an fvwm3 deb package from git. This is official and preferred method.
I am currently using this window manager on my Debian 11 system. Very stable.

I was an fvwm2 luser for many many years...got tired of the "broken by design" state of fvwm3 as it was installed in modern distros, so rather than horking with it to try to fix the problems I switched to openbox and tint2. I found them to be capable, almost as liteweight, and much easier to configure.

but yeah, the cult of fvwm is hard to break out of.

"broken by design" state of fvwm3
What do you mean? This is a new project. If you find any errors or inaccuracies, it would be a good idea to report them to the developer of this wm.
I switched to openbox
Openbox is dead project. I have tried to use it many times. I have no complaints about him, but he lacks something....I don't even know what, but he doesn't attract me.
