Finally! Imagine how much life energy we will save just on this forum because nvidia drivers will finally just automatically load like AMD.
No more kernel recompiling, dkms, confused users, etc.

Well fuck me sideways with a barge pole

Unfortunately it's only the kernel component for compute (CUDA) operations, let's hope they pursue the display side of things along with some user space drivers.

Looks like they've taken a leaf out of AMD's book and moved all the secret sauce to firmware and microcode blobs, which is why the new drivers only work with newer chipsets.

I can imagine a world in 5years where most old chipsets just work with Nouveau and the new ones are like the AMD driver.

This is by far just the first step towards fully operational open source nvidia driver, but this step had to be done. Alas, new open source modules will support only newer nvidia cards, of 2000s and 3000s series, so my GT 1030 would hardly be covered by upcoming open source drivers.

This proves once again that open source is the future, and intellectual property over intellectual products just impedes progress and technological development.
