Uptime Championships - Current champion: Bloom with a router at 965 days.
I have a media server in my rack that has to be retired, it has provided years of service and reliability and has endured years of abuse but now the fans are failing, it's out of space, and we can hear the remaining 2 fans left working whining up to compensate for the heat. It's being migrated but I looked at its uptime and thought it was impressive but I can't be the only person tracking and proud of longevity... so post a system uptime!
That server:
donald@host:~$ uptime
06:23:05 up 282 days, 19:27, 5 users, load average: 1.10, 1.06, 1.05
Current desktop:
[donald]@{localhoster}
[~]:> uptime
06:24:25 up 3 days, 12:40, 4 users, load average: 1.48, 1.48, 1.45
My longest uptime for any server in my career was 7 years.

Re: Uptime Championships
I've posted some decent uptimes before...I think I've got a few years a few times and was indeed proud. I've changed my mind! I try to enforce a 'courtesy reboot' every so often, months instead of years. I might even air it out a bit since I'm in a dirty dusty environment. Formerly at high altitudes, power supplies and spinning drives don't cool well.
Code: Select all
$ uptime
07:42:50 up 45 days, 18:34, 1 user, load average: 2.61, 2.48, 2.39

Re: Uptime Championships
I had occasion to reboot one of my dhcp/dns servers a couple of weeks ago (adding more disk for it's nighttime backup staging server duties).
It had been up for 625 days.

Re: Uptime Championships
My current uptime usually depends on how often I reboot to Windows to play RDR2.

I like the inxi tool, never used it before. You beat me by 2 days haha.Marie SWE wrote: ↑2021-08-01 01:12 I have just made a Timeshift in this one.. so a few hours Debian 10

Not a bad idea with the screen captures to verify the stated uptimes.
Typo perfectionish.

Re: Uptime Championships
It is easy to get false results from uptime.
I did it the first time by accident, the bios battery of my pc had died, I used ntpdate-debian to get right time. After that uptime was many years.

Re: Uptime Championships
I was wondering when someone would point that out , for now lets use the honor system and 'inxi -Fxz' with a screencap for the champion.
Currently reigning: Bloom.

Re: Uptime Championships
When I spent a lot of time on linuxmint.com forums in 2018, they always asked for a print from inxi.. no matter what you asked about, so that's the way I came in contact with that program.donald wrote: ↑2021-08-01 03:12I like the inxi tool, never used it before. It gives a pretty okay overview of the hardware, kernel and so on.. perfect if someone need help and need to describe hardware and so.
2 days is nothing, we are equal side by side when dealing with so many days.
I can't compete against those who have servers.. But it is a laptop, so I can see it a bit as I lead the laptop league. hahaha

I admit to cheating using necromancy and non server hardware . This is from one of a group of internal switches:
Running Time: 672 days 17 hours 12 minutes 38 seconds

Re: Uptime Championships - Current champion: BLOOM
Huh, here perspective wins. Curious, why doesn't this thread simply expose 'risky defective admins' as being those with the highest system up-times, i.e., I thought kernel security updates required a reboot, and isn't there a security water mark properly set by such (e.g., https://security-tracker.debian.org/tra ... -2020-3702) with every release of Debian?
While participation ribbons look, feel good, cool, I think the metals should go to those who come the closest to the exact number of days set by said water mark. Yes?

Horses for courses.
In my case, the squeeze server is isolated on an internal network, continues to perform it's duties quietly and isn't broken, so isn't getting upgraded until there are some benefits to doing so.

You are correct but I dont think the responses in this thread are for front end servers, likely backend, cluster components, or database servers. Servers deep entrenched with little exposure can and do run for years with a good firewall under an attentive administrator.

Nice! Your 'Horses for courses' an appropriate lead-in for cover and will always spin autists into an anal tizzy. Well played, kinda! :-Jdilberts_left_nut wrote: ↑2021-11-26 04:51 Horses for courses.

A loose characterization of "isolated" always brings warm comfort to a novice room, but such expression whiffs bitter cold and concern to serious security discussions. Vulnerability has a precise and aroused description for a reason...

Re: Uptime Championships - Current champion: Donald (cheating with a switch)
"...with great power there must also come -- great responsibility!"
When we look out upon the binary realm laid across our plane[t] and its apparent lack of 'promised containment' in securing information, it becomes blatantly obvious many 'admins' must NOT fully appreciate a role (especially within the largest of corporations (e.g., giant tech) with the greatest resources (i.e., $$)) and their responsibility in assuring our 4A protections which have all but been forgotten and tragically violated in order to liberally apply some ever changing and expected 'convenience' for the collective. We've got to again learn to say NO!
Those in wisdom rightly argued 'you could never have your cake and eat it (too)' on this current DARPA surveillance platform (i.e., interweb w/IoE), to-date the price has proven 'gargantuan', and now with cats all out of the bag, herding to apprehend the loose is at the least laughable. The whole corrupt system [DARPA] and its many collection inventions will be put down and replaced with information security the goal as new Republic's are stood up around the world.
This 'pie in the sky' notion will a(e)ffect everyone, it couldn't be more serious, and [is] exactly what brings me to Debian. #BlockChainQuantumInternet

Amazing! Here's just one example how great our industry 'sncks' at securing information and why the 'Log4j vulnerability' is disastrous on a scale unimagined...a link to their full report is at the end of the article.
