Need to upgrade Mint as well as Linux?

I have been using an older version of Linux Ubuntu, 4.* as well as an older version of the GUI wrapper, Linux Mint Sylvia. I recently got a post that these would not be supported and I would need to upgrade. Upgrading to Ubuntu 5.10 was simple enough, but changing to Version 20.1 of Mint is a bit of a pain. If I have the latest version of the Linux system, can I go on using Sylvia (version 18 of Mint? Or is it really necessary to upgrade for security reasons, etc.?
