"Disinformation should not be fought with censorship in a state governed by the rule of law." Dutch journalists' union steps to European court over Russian media ban
The Netherlands Association of Journalists (NVJ), the Press Freedom Fund and the digital civil rights organization Bits of Freedom (BOF) went to the European courts on Wednesday to challenge the European ban on Russian media. In a statement on its website, the NVJ stressed that it wants to examine the question of whether the undemocratic censorship measures are justified.
On March 2, the European Union imposed sweeping restrictions on the distribution of Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik in Europe, as part of its sanctions against Moscow. The EU argued that the Russian media were spreading Kremlin propaganda used to justify and support the invasion of Ukraine.
"We are not fans of RT and Sputnik. We do not see the channels as news media; it is pure state propaganda. But disinformation should not be entered with censorship in a state of law," said NVJ general secretary Thomas Bruning. "If government leaders can independently ban information, it affects the democratic rule of law as a whole."
Russian broadcasters are patently biased
The coalition says it does not want to stand up for the Russian broadcasters, which it says are patently biased, but it sees its task as "to raise the legitimacy and proportionality of the measures. After all, the question is whether the undemocratic censorship measures are justified."
"When you talk about sanctions, the idea is that you are punishing Russia. But in fact you are punishing the people of Europe by not treating them like adults and not allowing them to have access to information," Bruning says. He argues that the ban could set a precedent for banning other politicized news outlets.
The NVJ's lawsuit is also supported by several Dutch internet service providers and BOF. "It is not clear what exactly should be blocked, who should do it, or how long the blockade should last," BOF said.
"This is a political decision, without judicial review," said BOF's Rejo Zenger. "The decision to make information inaccessible should not be in the hands of our government leaders, but in those of independent judges." Zenger argues that you do not silence propaganda censorship, but only freedom of expression.
Not only Freedom is participating in the process, hosting and internet providers like BIT, MijnDomein and A2B have also joined in. Large parties such as KPN and Ziggo are missing.

French for "computer" is "ordinateur"
French for "computer science" is "informatique", a blend of information and automatique, which is defined as (translation from https://www.cnrtl.fr/definition/informatique)In its application to computing, it was coined by the professor of philology Jacques Perret in a letter dated 16 April 1955, in response to a request from IBM France, who believed the word calculateur was too restrictive in light of the possibilities of these machines
