CRAY-1 vs Raspberry Pi B

#1 Post by Hallvor »

I found an early 80s edition of the Guinness book of records, listing the CRAY-1 as the fastest computer in the world.

But how does it compare to one of the earliest versions of the Raspberry Pi?

Raspberry Pi Model B (2012)

Price: USD 35
CPU: 700 MHz (32-bit)
RAM: 256 MiB
MFLOPS: 58
Power: 3.5 W
Size: 85x56x17 mm
Weight: 40g
Storage: SD Card slot

CRAY-1 (1975)
Cost: USD 7.9 million (USD 35.3 million in 2021)
CPU: 80 MHz (64-bit)
RAM: 8,38 MB
MFLOPS: 160
Power: 115 kW
Size: 263x145x196 cm
Weight: 5.5 tons
Storage: 303 Megabytes

Not surprisingly, the supercomputer scores very well in floating point operations, that are useful in scientific calculations, which was why it was made in the first place.

Amazing how far we've come. I imagine the time traveller from 1975 asking me what I do with my Pi3. "Well, it's running game emulators on my TV" xD

Yes, and imagine how much that Pi3 would be worth in 1975.

Probably so much that you'd have several secret services on your tail.
