The Thinkpad T400 I just converted from FreeBSD to Kali Linux 2022.2. How it looks when I'm working.

Thanks mate, unfortunately no. X11 on default from openSUSE Tumbleweed/Network Image (248.3 MiB).
Installed it from Netinst ISO provisionally until Fedora 37.

I wanted to see how this system works.

A quick review, not too detailed.

PROS
It is very fast on boot, just 2sec to boot it desktop. I don't know what was wrong with Fedora Workstation, but in the two editions I used, it booted up with 10sec on a SSD. Maybe i must have payed some attention to the Fedora services which i didn't, now that I'm seeing this Tumbleweed starts in 2 seconds, I'll seriously look carefully on next Fedora startup to optimize.

It is very eye candy due to QT plasma, Decorations, Breeze themes. I say with conviction the themes dialogs on QT seems better versus GTK Adwaita / Themes.

QT vs GTK - QT themes seems way faster on opening apps on a DELL Desktop from 2020, maybe a complete GTK4 will have fixed something in this aspect, it remains to check it on Fedora 37.

Many awesome widgets for desktop or panels to KDE/Plasma.

Dolphin - The best FM GUI i ever checked.

Rolling OS.


CONS
Bloated with apps, 2000+ pckgs / Many apps are installed by default even from a netinst.
It didn't give me much opportunity to chose what I want or not while building the system.

No Wayland

A few plasma crashes while removing or moving widgets from desktop which i restored with a single click back + reports.

No Root for File Manager Dolphin or any other GUI(s) for security reasons. If one needs to perform root tasks just must do it from "su -" commands @ nano/vim.


I never used KDE more than 24hours but this time i will keep it a bit longer, Unless something very problematic comes up on the way to catch another OS for sake of checking.

P.S. all tests on real desktop, no virtual.

Alpine:



Both using the same kernel (5.19.3) and the same desktop (sway). Alpine is much lighter (no surprise there) but the amd-pstate driver is idling at 4GHz whereas Arch is running at 400MHz. Both kernels are unpatched, the only difference I can see is that Arch include the acpi_cpufreq in the kernel but Alpine supplies it as a module. Weird.

Alpine Linux is like a bird's feathers.

openSUSE TW X11 It lasted two months. In general, very well with frequent updates. But the first install i didn't used very wise during NETINST. As i said above, it didn't give me the opportunity to build it the way wanted. Very WRONG of me.

There was a lot possibility to selective features, but the options were not buttons they're simple text clicked, Never clicked such text thinking they are simply informative text so the system installed in default with many unwanted apps/games,tools and things.

I read a few info about this distro recently which i didn't knew at all as a newbie on KDE or openSUSE.
I hurried to try it again from scratch.

This is last X11 of TW.


2nd Install efforts, Wayland this time, of course openSUSE TW still using X11 as default, but there are possibility to change via Display Manager. So i did it and run to see it.

AMAZING! F*** AMAZING with Wayland. Better font rendering, very smooth clicking, scrolling, moving on apps that support Wayland, better Firefox. A lot better rendering on the hardware of 2020 or later, in general of Plasma/Wigets/Menus/Dialogs very good. It was worth moving. Ofcourse i noted few graphic glitchs here and there however, still worth sticking with Wayland even on a horrible 1080p monitor. Perhaps i should buy a better monitor 4K for a better experience.

Wayland since 2 days.


Dolphin is amazing FM, I can't get away from it anymore. I wanted to go to Fedora 37, but chances are I'll go with some other hardware.

Have you tried sway yet? wlroots is better than either kwin or mutter IMO.

Thanks bro, I am already on Wayland club since 1 year due to Fedora 35/36.

I broke up 2 months ago to join Tumbleweed. And as a beginner i thought there was no alternative but X11 standalone.

On a new hardware, it is useless to stay in X11.

No, i haven't tried sway on this Desktop yet, i used on another old Dell. Extremely fast WM to a simple i3wm config. I think to check later after exploring some Plasma/Distro settings for sake of leaerning. I suck to Arch, but openSUSE Tumbleweed isn't bad so far i used

Been spending a bit of time in Windows lately. One of the main games I mess with wine has kind of stopped working for me. Got tired of fighting with it. I am ashamed...
