Look in your BIOS and see if there's another boot mode you can use. Legacy, UEFI or however it's listed on your machine.

I've got a Lenovo Thinkpad T61 with an Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 GPU and 14.1" WXGA+ screen @ 1440x900 resolution running Kali Linux 2022.1. I didn't do anything special to get mine running.
It's out of service now after it notified me of a fan error on boot and shut down gracefully, but I have a shot of it and machine stats:

Kali GNU/Linux Rolling x86_64
kali-rolling 2022.1
Thinkpad T61 itachi
Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 @ 2.40GHz
4GB PC2-5300 RAM
Intel Mobile GM965/GL960 GPU
100GB Lenovo HDD @ 7200RPM
Ultrabay Slim CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo II Drive
TFT 14.1" 1440x900 (WXGA+) widescreen
Intel HD Audio

Pix or it didn't happen:
14.1" WXGA+ screen @ 1440x900 resolution running Kali 2022.1

Isn't that an Intel driver? I'm pretty sure it is... You might want to look here:

@Trihexagonal

I found the solution for my case, with SIS driver and "DisplaySize". See the posts bevore.

You mean this one?
JSM wrote: 2022-05-15 22:16 Ok, I will read about wayland and also mutter and Co :) If I will find a solution for SIS drivers, I will let you know.
It doesn't say anything about you having solved your problem. Neither is the thread marked as such.

But thanks for telling me.

If you had read the thread thoroughly, you'd have seen that someone already suggested that non-KMS drivers don't work with Wayland. The thread is obviously not solved.

Well after you were so rude and elitist in your mannerisms and said you were done talking to me, I put you on ignore.

Wayland is breaking my heart.. I hope Debian, or some other distribution, will still support X11, or at least it's features. I used to be able to configure my small remote computers to boot up in a console mode and run unhindered by a desktop. And then, I was able to remotely SSH into that machine, use X forwarding, and get a full graphical desktop served up on my local machine, with only minor additional load on the tiny remote. When finished. I simply exit ssh, and the tiny remote machine was back to it's old self. With the latest update, that ALL BROKE, now they need the overhead of a desktop with additional RDP stuff -- so sad.
This Wayland is destroying that capability, and to me, seems to be bringing Linux down to a single user desktop system.
The remote capability of legacy X11 would be great for cloud computing where the remote doesn't need any display or virtual display that Remote Desktop needs (Microsoft at it's best). I believe Ubuntu has/had a distribution for an image running on a cloud machine. I wonder if they supported a remote desktop? All that was really needed was a good X11 server that would run on Android (already have Xephyr for Linux, several for Windows, and ?Quartz? on Apple), and no need for Wayland! A whole family could each have their own userspace on what appears to be a large computer, all from their tiny mobile. I Imagine business usage of a cloud linux machine with individual desktops for all team members, while sharing 'disk' space, would be well accepted.
-- anyway -- I just hope some non-wayland distributions remain alive.

@canci

Ok, I am back here. Was was this up here?

After I deinstalled xorg with:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get -y purge xorg
I still get this:

Code: Select all

debian@debian:~$ loginctl
SESSION  UID USER   SEAT  TTY
      2 1000 debian seat0 tty2

1 sessions listed.
debian@debian:~$ loginctl show-session 2 -p Type
Type=x11
debian@debian:~$
:roll:

Maybe with this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get -y autoremove --purge xorg
I have it from here:

https://installati.one/debian/11/xorg/

See you then, if something is left after this :wink:

@canci

Well, after autoremove there is not more left a lot, but at least I have a GNOME desktop and a browser :D

But still the same output:

Code: Select all

debian@debian:~$ loginctl
SESSION  UID USER   SEAT  TTY
      2 1000 debian seat0 tty2

1 sessions listed.
debian@debian:~$ loginctl show-session 2 -p Type
Type=x11
debian@debian:~$
As you where writing once, that you are running debian 11 just with wayland, how can I get there?

@canci

I found a information on reddit:
For anyone Googling this problem and ending up here, the solution was to install the AMD firmware package "firmware-amd-graphics"
So I'll try!

However, I have to reinstall gdm3! My attempt to remove xwayland "completely" with Synaptic has unfortunately removed gdm3. Ok, bad luck.

If you answer soon with a better idea, then I can also make another installation, not the normal one with the net.ISO. I'll wait a bit.

Your video card doesn't support KMS, which is needed for Wayland to work. Sorry.

Installing AMD firmware makes no sense in your case. You don't have an AMD card.

At this point I'm pretty sure wayland/gnome/systemd/freedesktop (and co.) are doing precicely that, intentionally. These people don't seem to give a rats about real multi-user systems, it's all about the latte drinkers and their laptops and tablets these days.

I'll use wayland when it supports all the stuff I use, and that means running without 3D acceleration, using SSH forwarding, and providing multi-user graphical logins over a LAN.
Right now that's looking suspiciously like "never"... Without even factoring in all the random borkage and compatibility problems that still plauge it.
For all the talk of X being full of old crusty hacks, there sure are a lot of new crusty hacks needed to get basic functionality back under Wayland... And for all that, you still end up having to run X (or Xephyr or XWayland etc.) most of the time anyway. :lol:
Progress huh?

Cool. Now how about doing it in a pure wayland environment, without nesting an X server of some kind?

On the OP: If you want to use that GPU. you will almost certainly have to use X11. You'll likely also have to use something that isn't GNOME.

Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action. Four times is Official GNOME Policy.

You won't find one unless you write a KMS driver for SiS video cards.
