What does

Code: Select all

# cat /proc/asound/cards
say?
It's a desktop computer (It's a Lenovo Y710 Cube) with an integrated sound card "Realtek ALC892".
If I go to Settings > About, i see this:

Code: Select all

Memory 7.7GiB
Processor Intel® Core™ i5-6400 CPU @ 2.70GHz × 4
Graphics NV136
GNOME 3.30.2
OS type 64-bit
Disk 250.0 GB
and here is the result of # cat /proc/asound/cards

Code: Select all

 0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xdf080000 irq 17

As I mentioned previously, you are more likely to get the sound working with the latest version of Debian. Buster is two years old, and this is new hardware. I know you tried 11 and it didn't work, but we are more likely to get it working with 11. Even with 11 you will need to install the necessary firmware before it works. People may have more experience with 10 as you wrote, but that is generally either with older hardware, or working round problems in 10 that are now fixed in 11.

You said you tried a MX 19 live USB session. It seems that didn't recognise the soundcard either. You could pm stevepusser and ask him to have a look as he said he would. He has more experience with modern hardware.

If this was my system, I would install 11 and make sure the firmware is installed and working (intel-microcode and firmware-misc-nonfree) and go from there. I would look at dmesg and

Code: Select all

# cat /proc/asound/cards
and

Code: Select all

aplay -l
in 11 which you didn't do.

Okay thanks :)
I will try updating to 11 and pm stevepusser

I just tried installing intel-microcode on 10 and it gave me this output:

You need to install the package firmware-misc-nonfree. You will need to have included the contrib and non-free repositories for this.

This appears to be the graphics card, sound card is absent so maybe a driver missing. Did sound work before? Does it still have Windows on it and does sound work there? I did a search but can't find anything useful.

That's new to someone whose first laptop ran CP/M.

Skylake is new enough for me not to have experience with it and for it to have bugs in Buster that are fixed in newer kernels. At least this is what I surmise from skimming various forum posts and bug reports.

Can you try the MX 19 Live Session again and run "Quick System Info" from the menu, then paste the output into a text file and them into a message here? Or install inxi on Debian and run "inxi -Fxxxz" in a terminal there.

MX also has a MX tool called "Select Sound" for cases where you may have a sound output from the motherboard and another from a GPU, which could be your situation.

Did you install firmware-misc-nonfree as recommended by stevepusser and Bloom?

Strange bug report. Some places mentions firmware-nonfree, others firmware-misc-nonfree. There is no package called firmware-nonfree. :?

Nvidia firmware is in the firmware-misc-nonfree package, as already recommended.

It's a thing called a source package, apparently.

What we really want is the firmware for Skylake's built in sound card/codec. Hopefully that will let the installation see it.

Maybe it's disabled in BIOS/UEFI setup? I use an i5-6500 with the onboard sound disabled as I use a PCI sound card instead. It also doesn't show in aplay -l or lspci. If it was just the driver or firmware I imagine it still should show in lspci.

Sorry for the late response, I was feeling ill for a couple of days. I will upgrade to Debian 11 tomorrow to run the commands FreewheelinFrank suggested

That sounds right

I uninstalled Windows when I installed Linux, but I used Windows for years and sound worked great.

I only have the option "NVidia: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia" and when I press "Test current sound card" (after choosing the NVidia option instead of "none"), nothing happens.

I'm not entirely sure how to install that, do I need to download the "firmware-nonfree_20190114-2.debian.tar.xz" from https://packages.debian.org/source/bust ... re-nonfree?

I don't think I changed anything in BIOS when I set up Linux, and sound worked on Windows (I don't know if that is what you meant, sorry if it wasn't)

Hope you are feeling better.

You don't need firmware-nonfree - that's just where firmware-misc-nonfree comes from. It's not something you install.

Sorry again for the long wait, I tried reinstalling Debian 10 so I could have a clean Debian 11 but my brother decided it was time to mess with the internet yesterday, so I upgraded today.

Still missing firmware-misc-nonfree (or it's not loading for some reason):

This might be worth investigating. Is TPM or fast boot preventing the installation seeing the sound card?

intel-microcode

And Atheros again.
I think TPM or fast boot might have done something, I tried disabling both and now both of the error messages have disappeared: https://pastebin.com/EDvNEd3z

Still not seeing the soundcard then.

I have to admit I'm stumped.
