WIFI installation
WIFI installation
I am trying to learn Debian Linux. I have an old HP Pavilion ZV6000 laptop that I have installed Debian Buster onto. The problem is that the internal WIFI is not recognized. I have an external USB Panda pau06 that comes with the install package (LinuxDriver4Fedora_v2.5.0.3.tar.bz2) but I cannot determine if it will work with Debian Buster. If so how do i extract the .tar.bz and install the drivers? Like I said i am very new and trying to learn (also 75 years old).
Also is there any recommended course or book that can explain or teach me the fundamentals of working in Debian (and installing software)?
I would be grateful for any help you can provide.

Re: WIFI installation
Search for "Debian USB Panda pau06" and the first result has a solution - https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=5032
Apparently the device has a Ralink RT5372 chipset. This uses the rt2800usb driver and requires firmware from the firmware-misc-nonfree package. The driver should be in the kernel already, so install the firmware, reboot, and then try it. There are several other tweak suggestions in that thread too.

Re: WIFI installation
Actually I Purchased the Panda pau06 usb and it came with a mini cd. I have not been able to get it installed yet. I am sure that I am doing the install incorrectly. Researching now how to do and install from cd, but not getting very far, very slowly.

Re: WIFI installation
We've had occasional reports of this but haven't nailed down the cause yet. Are you using a VPN or TOR?KE5WCT wrote: ↑2021-09-14 18:01Do you happen to know why anytime I attempt to access the wiki.debian.org web I get:sunrat wrote: ↑2021-09-14 07:49 Search for "Debian USB Panda pau06" and the first result has a solution - https://forums.bunsenlabs.org/viewtopic.php?id=5032

Did you try the advice in that BunsenLabs forum? Your mini cd is a dead end, not the right software for Debian.

Re: WIFI installation
What worked for me is:
- Install with non-free drivers.
- After install, uninstall the broadcom-sta-dkms.
- Install the firmware-b43-installer

Re: WIFI installation
Sorry, not relevant. OP has a Ralink device and this instruction is for Broadcom.

Re: WIFI installation
Actually @sunrat brcm drivers work for the dv6000 card which is probably the onboard pci wifi card in this lap.
If they don't work right away, card is not recognized, take the battery out of the lap and run on power cord only so you can unplug the power. Plug back in and then try install.

Re: WIFI installation
Aaah, I getcha @filozofio @trinidad . I was focusing on the question OP asked about how to get USB device working and not on the question they should have asked which is how to get the onboard working.
This is an old laptop. Does it really only have 1GB RAM? (specs - https://www.cnet.com/products/hp-pavilion-zv6000/ ). Debian would struggle on that with any desktop environment but Gnome would probably be glacial or unusable. Forget using an internet browser. Could be ok for learning basics with a light desktop like LXQt or a window manager like Openbox. Or may be better with a light distro such as Antix.
As far as I could ascertain, it has a "Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller" so follow the advice of @filozofio to try to get the onboard wifi working.
Also turned up in search were some articles about class action taken against HP in 2008 for design faults with the power inverter and wireless - https://www.techrepublic.com/forums/dis ... t-working/ so possibly the onboard wifi just doesn't work.
How did you determine it is not recognised? Does it appear when you open a terminal and run

Re: WIFI installation
Greetings, I'd suggest to download and do a fresh install of Debian using the iso that contains non-free firmware.
From this link you can download the iso depending on your PC architecture (most probable amd64).
I think it's better to try this solution first than going to the rabbit hole of finding the isolated firmware driver for your device.
Please feel free to ask any further questions if you do not know exactly which iso to download
