I would install a minimal lxde:

Installing minimal debian

1. install Debian netinstall (do not choose a DE)

2. in terminal:
login als root
edit /etc/apt/sources.list with nano (contrib non-free)
apt update && apt dist-upgrade
apt install sudo
usermod -a -G sudo <username>

3. apt install network-manager xorg lxde-core lightdm synaptic
(network-manager-gnome wireless-tools voor wireless)
reboot

4. synaptic install: firmware-linux firmware-linux-free firmware-linux-nonfree
leafpad lxterminal tuxcmd build-essential

5. synaptic install: (alsa-base) alsa-utils alsamixergui libalsaplayer0
sudo alsactl init
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/*
remove pulseaudio

You could install both and decide for yourself.

+1

The difference is that LXDE is older and uses GTK (like Gnome and XFCE). LXQT is newer and uses the Qt toolkit (like KDE). The plan was to focus all development effort on LXQT and abandon LXDE, but LXDE still gets some development.

3. apt install network-manager xorg lxde-core lightdm synaptic
I use ceni instead of network-manager. lxde-core is a metapackage.
This package is a metapackage which depends on minimal LXDE components set required to get a working desktop - pcmanfm, lxpanel, and lxde-session. This package also recommends few the most useful applications such as terminal emulator, notification-daemon, and xscreensaver.

If you just want to pick and choose the core components then feel free to remove this package.

You don't need either in entirety. Do what peer suggested, do a minimal Debian netinstall. Then install openbox and tint2 followed by pcmanfm, lxterminal and any other features you like from LXDE.

"LXDE and LXQT which one is better ".
Better is subjective and very much down to the individual. If the question had been "LXDE and LXQT which one is lighter " The I'd wager LXDE. LXQT has been trying to replace LXDE for years now but LXDE simply wont die. Why? I suspect because of the older hardware users with their lower specs need every bit of help they can get.

If I had a machine of that spec I'd say LXDE is better because it'd lighter

That said with that hardware as Bulkley said. It's begging for a custom desktop with a window manager. If you spend your time on it it'll boot to the desktop at well under 100MB

XFCE <---light , the best , the fastest

For an old computer like yours I recommend Antix : https://antixlinux.com/
It's a Debian based distribution.

If you prefer you can of course install IceWM in Debian but it's a bit difficult to set it up.
The advantage of Antix is that everything is already set up, and the packages and repositories are the same as in Debian.

I do not know, what this Guy had testet
With the same processes ,
on xfce , i have 335 mb
(no tumblerd , no i-bus) <-- for what ?? , i dont use alternate inputs , but gvfs for aut usb mounts
Notifier , pulseaudio,
policy-kit-gnome-agent (u need for some admin-acces , for many programs)

power-manager-plugin (that tool has brightness for laptops inkl, )
So, by fair, and install this also on LXTQ and LXDE , or u cant adjust the brightness on Laptop

the same thing in LXQT , i have 345 mb , and on lxde 270 mb

That its, why 'LXQT never do winthe race against xfce , the better handling does the rest.
and that's is why LXDE is always living , because LXQT'S Ram is too high,
The absolute Lightwight-Distros do not change to LXQT

And i have Testet Windows-Manager in Anit-x . the Space-FM Destop
in In space-fm -Desktop , u can create Icons and Folders in u REAL Desktop.
with all my processes , that was 210 mb
BUT the Handling on ANTI-X is not for Berginners , 1000s config-files
and 40 !! Repositories ,
and that for only 60mb better then LXDE , or 115 better the XFCE ??

Sorry @gusi it is very difficult to understand what you are talking about. I suggest you make your posts shorter and stay relevant to the topic.
