Debian 11.1.0 is hanging at GRUB bootloader

#1 Post by Zilch »

I have just installed Debian 11.1.0, and I couldn't be happier! I decided to go with LXDE, and so far it's pretty darn solid.

But there is one small issue that really bugging me. Every second boot, GRUB seems to freeze. I have made some changes to sources.list, but other than that nothing significant.

As for my boot drive, I'm using a WD Black SN850 1TB (obviously without the heatsink).

I did try to search on Google (as suggested by one of the pinned topics), but found zilch ;P

Here's a video of my Dell 5290 hanging on startup (sorry for the focus issues, phone doesn't have laser autofocus)...

In the video the laptop was just waking up from a reboot. Almost forgot to mention I have also installed WINE, hence its repo.

Here's a screenshot from neofetch and sources.list...

Also important to note is that it only happens when I reboot the system. If I power it off, and back on, it boots as it should. But every single time I restart, it does freeze.

There is a brief second where it does work. So if I hit 'enter' at the boot menu (after a restart), it'll boot just fine.

This is enough to tell me that the issue lies with GRUB.

Just to note, most 'Windows' features are turned off (TPM 2.0, secure boot, Intel SGX and Intel Truted Execution) to get Linux to boot properly. I am considering turning off UEFI, as I'm thinking that could fix the restart issue.

Don't know the grub stuff, but my first step before getting into that would be to look the computer up on the Dell website to see if there is a bios update.

Perhaps consider reinstalling grub such as described at: https://wiki.debian.org/GrubEFIReinstall

Thanks guys. Eventually got sorted.

My laptop's BIOS has a feature where I can enable legacy boot, but it still mainly boots UEFI. I enabled it, and it actually worked!

I can only assume GRUB still contains some legacy components. In any case, Debian works 100% now.
