Best way to install Debian testing

#1 Post by chriszamanis »

Hi, i have a few days that i decide to try Debian.
I try installing it in a virtual machine first to try it before i install it on my main pc.
I have a few newbie question i think!

1)What is the best way to install debian testing? I try installing stable and then change the sources.list and i try installing testing from netinstall. Is the same, or there is only one way to do it with the right way?

2)The sources.list that i now have is:

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm main non-free contrib
deb-src http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm main non-free contrib

deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security main contrib non-free
deb-src http://security.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security main contrib non-free

Is that all we need for running testing?

3)When bookworm became the stable version, how we move to the next testing?

If anyone knows and have the time,
Thanks a lot

You can change via the sources list.

Unless you need the Debian source files, most people don't, you don't need the lines which begin deb-src.

Testing does not get security updates.
Please note that security updates for testing distribution are not yet managed by the security team. Hence, testing does not get security updates in a timely manner. You are encouraged to switch your sources.list entries from testing to bullseye for the time being if you need security support. See also the entry in the Security Team's FAQ for the testing distribution.
Source - https://www.debian.org/releases/bookworm/

When bookworm becomes Stable you can change to the next Testing.

thanks for your time.
In the link from your post it says for security updates , from time to time to change sources.list so we can get security updates.
So this line "deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security main contrib non-free is not working? i mean we can delete it or we need it?"
Can we have testing sources with stable on comment state (#) so we can time to time change the comment and turn from one to another so we can get security updates? and this procedure is not going to brake the system? (i mean to get security updates from stable repositories)

Thanks a lot again

It's for a pc I have connected with a tv so I would like to have some apps in newest verions.

And perhaps after time I may install one or two apps I would like to Play (pi-hole for example)

So this line "deb http://security.debian.org/debian-security bookworm-security main contrib non-free is not working?
This may be helpful: https://www.debian.org/releases/bookworm/errata

Thanks!
So if i get it right we can add these two repositories so we can have security updates?

You can also replace:

Code: Select all

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/ bookworm main
with:

Code: Select all

deb http://deb.debian.org/debian/testing main
I am not aware of all that it changes, but I do know that it loads kernel 5.15.x instead of 5.14.x.

Yes i know we can change the name of next release with testing in sources, but i feel more secure (i may be wrong about it but it is in my mind!) to change it by hand to the name of the next testing release, so i can manually do the update when the time comes. I think with testing word in repository the update will be automatic

No, don't do that, it can break your system. Seriously, if you have to ask you should not be using testing. I've been using Debian for over 16 years and have gone back to using stable after messing with unstable and testing for years, it is much less hassle. Stable usually Just Works!

Ok thanks for that, i win not do it! I am confused because in this link https://www.debian.org/releases/bookworm/ it says in a point "Please note that security updates for "testing" distribution are not yet managed by the security team. Hence, "testing" does not get security updates in a timely manner. You are encouraged to switch your sources.list entries from testing to bullseye for the time being if you need security support. That means "if you want security, run stable".

Late reply but if this is why you are considering Testing, perhaps you could learn to backport software to Stable?

No it's never late! Thank you, i check for it, but i believe if you want something big in a newer version from backport (i mean something like newest gnome for example), it will be difficult
