change Nemo for Thunar

#1 Post by Waldo Jeffers »

We want to use Thunar file manager. (hOW) Can we uninstall Nemo, since it will become unused?
btw Thunar File Manager should be XFCE. Our Deb11 is Cinn version. Still we could install it from syn man. We don't get it...

Carefully try it. Read the messages about what will be uninstalled. If it looks like something critical to your system will be removed, stop, don't proceed!

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge nemo

You can carefully read what packages are removed and then read those packages' descriptions.

If the console is a bit complicated to use, you can install Synaptic which shows you a nice GUI for package installation.

Have a look at the Preferred Applications under System Settings

How about a plain vanilla install of Debian in a VM and then experiment with that. Thats what I would do. After the install though I would backup the VM so when you foobar the original you can load up the backup and try again.
Get your linux on.

That sounds very involved. OP just wants to change a file manager. If Thunar doesn't work well, they can just switch back to Nemo. Thunar also has like 10 dependencies. Those are quickly removed. Installing a VM seems a bit like overkill.

Code: Select all

sudo apt purge nemo
Only thing I would add is, when running such commands, to make a habit of simulating them first, without sudo, as your user which can be done as follows:

Code: Select all

$ apt -s purge nemo
The -s flag will suffice but, for good measure, since there are other ways of skinning the proverbial cat:

Code: Select all

$ apt --simulate purge nemo
$ apt --just-print purge nemo
$ apt --dry-run purge nemo
$ apt --recon purge nemo
$ apt --no-act purge nemo
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.
