Ok to add directories to ~/Home?

#1 Post by BlueCoyote »

For my own organization and ease of backing up, I prefer adding a few directories like "Projects" and "Podcasts" to my Home directory (rather than placing them in Home/Documents, Home/Music, etc).

So this:

Home
- Desktop
- Documents
- Music
- Projects
- Podcasts
(etc)

Instead of something like this:

Home
- Desktop
- Documents
--- Documents/Projects
- Music
--- Music/Podcasts
(etc)

Will doing so cause problems of any kind?

I've researched online generally and in Debian resources specifically, and I don't see any mention of this. Perhaps I don't know how to phrase it for the search?

You are creating sub directories in existing directories in your own home folder. No problem

Your home folder is your personal world. There are no rules really. I'm not sure where but you can even change the defaults for the main folders somewhere if you wanted your downloads to go to a folder named "my downloads" or whatever. You have total power in that directory as it should be.

You think about ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs I guess

Code: Select all

cat ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs

# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Bureau"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/"
