shutter in Debian 10

#1 Post by djevanstn »

<solved> I have been in what I feel has been a real battle in switching from Linux Mint to Debian. "SNAPS" however, don't seem to work on two different recently installed Debian machines. (NordPass and SHUTTER) I finally was able to get NordPass using "FLATPAK" - But I haven't been able to get Shutter installed. I've tried PPA's and snap. I'd be glad to re-visit these issues later, but can anyone offer any other possible alternate installation methods to get shutter installed? Shutter absolutely has to work. It's a must have app for me. I'd sure appreciate any assistance in getting Shutter going. This is the last item remaining in my switch to Debian.

I see that you have to install it from source

This begs the question as to why you installed an outdated Debian 10 when 11 was available.

There is an older shutter-0.96 in the Buster-based MX 19 test repo, and the current 0.99.2, backported from Debian testing, in the MX 21 test repo (based on Debian 11). https://repology.org/project/shutter/versions

As I recall, both of these require additional backported packages in the MX repos. You can't just install the downloaded shutter debs with apt.

And as for PPAs, you have discovered why they are mostly not recommended in Debian, since they only build Ubuntu packages.

I'm curious why shutter is a must-have program when there are many screenshot programs available. I use scrot for most of mine. or Flameshot for a full featured one with editing and notation capabilities. kde-spectacle is another good option if you're on KDE.

stevepusser - Thank you for the reply. I did install 11. No idea why I wrote 10. Thank you for the link. I did review it...

sunrat - I simply like how it (shutter) works. I like that I can take the screen print and the application holds the picture by simply pressing enter. I can deal with it immediately or come back to it. I like the flow and speed of the program. I did immediately start looking for a replacement, found and installed Flameshot immediately after my initial post here. Because of my issues installing "shutter" I took a look at it. I really don't need all that, I don't particularly like the save process, but, it will do in the absence of shutter support in Debian 11. All that said, it is very impressive. I particularly like the immediate on screen notation ability, and several of the handy "accessories." I'll add scrot too and take a "look see." I did not encounter that in my replacement search.

peer - I just didn't know... Thank you for the link... "informative"
