September 10th, 2022 https://www.debian.org/News/2022/2022091002
------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Debian project is pleased to announce the fifth update of its stable
distribution Debian 11 (codename "bullseye"). This point release mainly
adds corrections for security issues, along with a few adjustments for
serious problems. Security advisories have already been published
separately and are referenced where available.

Please note that the point release does not constitute a new version of
Debian 11 but only updates some of the packages included. There is no
need to throw away old "bullseye" media. After installation, packages
can be upgraded to the current versions using an up-to-date Debian
mirror.

Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won't have
to update many packages, and most such updates are included in the point
release.

New installation images will be available soon at the regular locations.

Upgrading an existing installation to this revision can be achieved by
pointing the package management system at one of Debian's many HTTP
mirrors. A comprehensive list of mirrors is available at:

Re: Updated Debian 11: 11.5 released

#2 Post by p.H »

IMO the most notable change in this stable point release is the upgrade of GRUB 2.04 to 2.06. Such upgrade of a major system component in a stable release is quite rare IME.

A significant change in upstream GRUB 2.06 is that it sets GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=true by default, which disables the use of os-prober to detect other operating systems and add them to the GRUB menu. This applies to testing/sid. However Debian wisely kept GRUB_DISABLE_OS_PROBER=false by default in the stable and oldstable releases.

So I've just spent almost the whole of my Sunday updating 7 installations and then fixing the mess in every grub menu. os-prober results in a myriad of extra entries, many duplicates and an unnecessarily complex menu. Three more to do tomorrow. :(

Can you elaborate ? The update should not change grub-mkconfig behaviour w.r.t. os-prober.

Hi there
I run a load of Windows 11 VM's on Debian -- in bullseye 11.4 the tpm emulator packages swtpm swtpm-tools were missing but were in the backports repo. So installable with apt install -t bullseye-backports swtpm swtpm-tools and then Windows 11 VM's on KVM/QEMU were working again.

Do these packages exist in 11.5 bullseye distro so I can "regularise" my system instead of using the backports repo which is not usually a good idea for "regular maintenance".

I notice also on Bookworm testing (unstable) recently QEMU failed so waiting on that release,

A load of people do run Windows VM's on KVM/QEMU and W11 needs a TPM -- emulation is fine so I think its important to ensure the package is included in the main distro.

Cheers
j

What I ended up with in the GRUB menu was the primary operating system followed by a series of entries by os-prober - all top level but initially the os-prober entries were not visible. Then I had a submenu for that OS with all the os-prober entries duplicated, followed by the linux script entries, which just duplicate those of the os-prober. On a dual boot system this was all repeated for the second OS; on a tri-boot system again for the third OS. What took the longest time was the entries that were hidden, until actually booting the machine, when they'd become visible. From memory I had 14 additional entries per OS, so up to 42 on a tri-boot machine, which then had to be cleaned up 3 times and then again by moving the not visible entries to a sub-menu, where they became visible. On one machine, where I hadn't purged old kernels it was magnified by 5 times, rather than the once or twice since I usually keep the previous one or two kernels when an update comes through. All of this multiplied by the number of OS's on each machine.

Never had this happen before. No screen shots or text to show since I've cleaned it all up. See how I go today but they're simple systems, one with Win7/Debian, the other with Debian 11 and 10.

Upon reflection, during the update I was asked if I wanted to update a GRUB config file. Now normally I keep config files that I've had to spend time setting up (things like samba) but Grub I usually take the defaults. A combination of the irresistible lure of sns syndrome plus "what could possibly go wrong?" prompted me to answer "Yes! Change it!!".

Anyway, all sorted now and the biggest drama was from my missus who wanted me outside doing pre-Spring pruning in the garden, not driving a keyboard....again.

The repos for 11.5 are exactly the same as 11.4. These point releases only mean that you can get installation media that includes all the updates since the original release, so you don't need to make a large batch of updates after installation. Of course, if you do a netinstall, it doesn't really matter. But if you originally installed 11.4 (or 11.3, or 11.0), and have been updating all along, you ARE running 11.5 now. Point releases are not new versions. Just waypoints on the update trail.

Hi all!

I am also dealing with the problems related to the GRUB configuration. I have a multiboot system and my previous configuration got messed up and I don't know how to fix it. For now, Debian took the control of the process and updating GRUB in the other OSs did not work.

The annoyance is that I now get prompted to open the Debian encryption no matter the boot order and I would like to avoid that when booting other systems. That is why I would like to give it over to the AntiX installation.

Can someone please point me to the solution of the problem at hand? Hopefully, you can also explain to me what happened, as I am still somewhat new to the complexities of the GNU/Linux world.

Sorry, if I should have opened a new thread instead, but I thought this might be the proper place as other users might have the same problem with the update.

Kind regards,

Nubian

I just upgraded to 11.5 on my main system which has 7 operating systems installed (note to self - cut down! :D ).
No GRUB issues here. Or any issues at all so far.
