Re: VirtualBox 6.1.18 on Bullseye?
Me bad. It's the generic Linux run package called "run installer" at the bottom of the "Oracle VM VirtualBox Base Packages - 6.1.18" package list:kalle123 wrote:What 'generic deb package' please?pwzhangzz wrote:I used the generic deb package to install VirtualBox 6.1.18 on Debian 11 and everything works fine, including guest additions, etc., for both Windows 10 and Debian 11 VMs.
One of the Ubuntu packages or Debian 10?

The file name is called "VirtualBox-6.1.18-142142-Linux_amd64.txt", just make it executable and run it. Please consult the instructions by quixote in the fourth post of this thread.

date 2021-08-17Packages for VirtualBox are not available in Debian 11 as of the full freeze in the bullseye non-free repo (VBox package tracking system).
Oracle Virtualbox third-party repository
There is no official vbox packages available for Bullseye, but an official package will be available after release: Bullseye Package request bug (Oracle). Installation instructions coming soon

Huh. Backported Bullseye-compatible MX 21 packages aren't that hard to build once you get the hang of it: http://mxrepo.com/mx/testrepo/pool/test/v/virtualbox/

Re: VirtualBox 6.1.18 on Bullseye?
I spent some time now trying to run an isolated bullseye VM with Gnome on QEMU/KVM with no success (on my Bullseye machine). I installed using the instructions on: https://wiki.debian.org/KVMHead_on_a_Stick wrote: ↑2021-03-18 17:28Well I suppose there is a "political" element because VirtualBox relies on non-free blobs, which should in itself be a warning sign for Debian users, but the linked bug report does clearly demonstrate how disinterested Oracle are in respect of security issues.kalle123 wrote:In my eyes this is a political thing
And anyway VB performance sucks compared to the open source QEMU/KVM alternative:
https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page= ... -kvm&num=1
But this is off topic so I'll shut up now.
I am using Vagrant to provision it, I also see there are many Bullseye boxes that work on Libvirt OR Virtualbox on app.vagrantup.com, but the ones with Gnome only for Virtualbox. I see also libvirt provider does not have the gui option that Virtualbox has to enable GUI.
Vagrantfile:
Code: Select all
Vagrant.configure("2") do |config|
# Debian 11
config.vm.box = "debian/bullseye64"
config.vm.provider "libvirt" do |lv|
# Display the GUI when booting the machine
#lv.gui = true # this option does not exist on libvirt provider
# Install gnome
config.vm.provision "shell", inline: "sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y && apt install -y gnome python3-pip"
# Customize the amount of memory on the VM:
lv.memory = "6000"
end
end
Since I see some people successful with QEMU, were you able to run Gnome on it? How?

Re: VirtualBox 6.1.18 on Bullseye?
Starting a few years ago I've mentioned the absence of the various agents and video drivers for VM's included in a default installation - QXL and Virtio etc, so vanilla doesn't always do well...fernandocesarpinto wrote: ↑2021-08-28 12:02 Since I see some people successful with QEMU, were you able to run Gnome on it? In heavy UI installations the CPU makes a huge difference, make or break, since it is doing much more work than a bare metal install.
Otherwise, give the qemu vm a vfio gpu, problem solved.
Other evidence is the performance GAIN from a running the vm remotely, ie not viewing vm on the host.

I'd just like to comment that I've also switched now that I use Bullseye and can thoroughly recommend it: Excellent.Bloom wrote: ↑2021-02-15 07:54 I switched to KVM/QEMU with LibVirt and virt-manager. Works flawlessly and I never looked back.
See https://wiki.debian.org/KVM
DebianStable
Code: Select all
$ vrms
No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.
