network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
Debian 9 (stretch), xfce desktop. The network manager applet icon disappeared from the upper notification panel, and no internet connecion anymore too. I never had such issue before. I've tried various commands to restart network manager, but no success. nm-applet command show 'command not found'. How to restore Network Manager and internet connectivity?
P.S. before this happened, I uninstalled python 2.7 and installed python 3.5 - but I don't think it could be somehow related to issue.

Re: network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
What network manager were you using? Wicd does indeed depend on Python 2. It may well have been the default for an XFCE install back in Stretch as it has no Gnome dependencies.
Re: network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
I don't know, as it just worked and I didn't care about it. Based on its indicator pictures that I see it could be Wicd, yes. How I can reinstall it without Internet connectivity? I checked content of /var/cache/apt/archives/ directory, there is
wicd_1.7.2.4-4.1_all.deb
wicd_1.7.4+tb2-5~deb9u1_all.deb
wicd-daemon_1.7.2.4-4.1_all.deb
wicd-daemon_1.7.4+tb2-5~deb9u1_all.deb
wicd-gtk_1.7.2.4-4.1_all.deb
wicd-gtk_1.7.4+tb2-5~deb9u1_all.deb
wicd_1.7.2.4-4.1_all.deb
wicd_1.7.4+tb2-5~deb9u1_all.deb
wicd-daemon_1.7.2.4-4.1_all.deb
wicd-daemon_1.7.4+tb2-5~deb9u1_all.deb
wicd-gtk_1.7.2.4-4.1_all.deb
wicd-gtk_1.7.4+tb2-5~deb9u1_all.deb

Re: network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
You will need to revert to Python 2. Maybe APT will have the old packages cached. If not, it is probably possible to configure a network configuration manually or maybe download the Python packages on the device you are using now and put them on a USB drive or use Bluetooth if that still works.
Re: network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
I switched to Python 2.7 using update-alternatives
# update-alternatives --config python
# python --version
Python 2.7.13
then reinstalled wicd:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall wicd
but how get it work? I didn't see the wicd applet in the list in Panel.

Re: network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
And..? Is Wicd up now? Did you restart?
Re: network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
Ops. I had to restart laptop: now wicd applet is up, network connection restored. What's not clear: Debian 9 installation include both Python 2.7 and 3.5 versions by default, and we can just switch between the python alternative versions via # update-alternatives --config python command.
By mistake, first I just uninstalled Python 2.7 via Synaptic package manager, then installed Python 3.5. If I was able switch back to Python 2, means it was installed again, or not removed?

Re: network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
At a guess, the packages were still cached.
Re: network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
so I can't swith to Python 3 as Wicd network manager will be removed?

Re: network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
You need Python 2 for Wicd to work. It may be possible to install 3 at the same time, so Wicd would still work but you could run other programs in 3. At least, a quick Google suggests this is possible, but it is outside my experience.
XFCE in Buster/Bullseye uses the Gnome network manager, because there is no Python 2 and no Wicd, which is a shame because I liked Wicd.
It may be possible to uninstall Wicd and use Gnome network manager in Stretch so you can install Python 3 and uninstall 2.
Edit: correction of version name.

Re: network manager applet dissapear and no internet connectivity
So Debian Stretch have two Python stacks,Python 2.x and Python 3.x which coexist in the system. Switching between python versions doesn't uninstall another package, just switches to another vers. Correct?

Seems to be - just from a web search, not from personal experience, like I said. An example hit:
