Intermittent video playback freeze of external HDD

#1 Post by undesign »

I have an odd issue. smplayer intermittently freezes when playing avi (low res) or mkv files. This didn't happen with Debian 10 (all versions) or older.
Details:
- I have three Debian 11 installations with Intel, ATI and NVIDIA video cards, so most likely it is not a video card / driver issue, because the behavior is the same
- increasing the cache doesn't help (I did up to 10Mb)
- I tested with various video settings and the behavior is the same (initially, I thought this is the issue)
- YT playback in Firefox works flawless
- in VLC, the symptoms are a bit worse, in the way that the image turns pixelated, then back to normal after the freezes ends. Also, the freeze is longer.
- this doesn't happen if the files are played locally, only from an external HDD
- no errors / warnings are displayed in system messages

So, this is looks like an USB issue, but I have only indirect proofs.

This seems to be solved with Debian 11.1 update.
