I have a Huawei 160 USB modem which worked fine under Debian Stretch. Now, after upgrade to Buster, it stopped working.

Aug 18 12:05:52 nb12 ModemManager[566]: <info> Modem /org/freedesktop/ModemManager1/Modem/0: state changed (disconnecting -> registered)
Why is the modem hanging up after a few seconds?? What to do?

Check this:
Code: Select all
apt list -i modemmanager libqmi-utils libmbim-utils policykit-1
If one component is missing, install it and reboot.

Difficult to go further
see /etc/ppp/options file for potential ppp configuration.
+ is wvdial installed ? If not, install it and see /etc/wvdial.conf file.

Thank you, and yes, wvdial is installed. I find it puzzling that we obviously get a connection, but then the modem hangs up.
And what is
indicating? Could it have to do with the renaming of network connections when we move from earlier releases to Buster?

Now I looked for the output of
ip a during the attempt of making the modem connection, and I get
Code: Select all
ppp0: <POINTOPOINT,MULTICAST,NOARP,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UNKNOWN group default qlen 3
link/ppp
ppp0 is an old-style (non-unique) name. Could this be part of the issue, and if so, what should be done? I guess that maybe we'd need some udev rule?
