[solved] Problem in HP Laserjet P1007 printer installation

#1 Post by bkpsusmitaa »

Dear friends,
I am a Central Government Officer of India, and trying to implement Linux in our office. We have bought 16 brand new systems based on Debian Linux. Debian works in the system nicely, but we can not install a newly bought HP Laserjet P1007 printer, although the printer is working nicely in Windows system we already have. Our colleagues and superiors are hardly conversant with the nitty-gritty of the systems, and may quickly believe that there was something involved under-the-table. This email is to request to help not only the issue, but also protect our standing. The system details is as follows:

Dear friends,

Further inputs:
Had been to HPLIP page at
Used the following codes one after another, as directed:
1. sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog
2. dmesg

1. For
sudo tail -f /var/log/syslog
, I saved the output to syslog.txt

Last frontier -Problem in HP Laserjet P1007 printer installa

Ran HPLIP under Debian, both the NATIVE 2.8.6.b-4 for Debian 5.0.2 Lenny, and the latest hplip-3.9.6b.run provided by HP Linux support page http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/downloads.html . Successfully ran the programs, and the printer is configured.
Then hp-setup is run from root shell, as directed.

It activates a script from http://hplip.sourceforge.net/plugin.conf, which I believe is trying to download a file core_install.py from the server and the report is as below:

Dear Ange,
Thanks. Indeed, the driver works and I am printing. For those who need a one page solution, I will quote the major steps here:
1. Go to the
webpage, read and download appropriate drivers.

2. Follow the steps below:

Code: Select all

DEBIAN NOTES
------------
    Install build-essential, foomatic-filters, cupsys FIRST:
        $ su
        # apt-get install build-essential
        # apt-get install foomatic-filters
        # apt-get install cupsys
Copy the foo2zjs.tar.gz file to the user directory
        $ tar zxf foo2zjs.tar.gz
        $ cd foo2zjs
        $ make
        $ ./getweb 1020
            OR other printer

Get extra files from the web, such as .ICM profiles for color correction,
and firmware. Select the model number for your printer:
    $ ./getweb cpwl     # Get Minolta Color PageWorks/Pro L .ICM files
    $ ./getweb 2200     # Get Minolta 2200 DL .ICM files
    $ ./getweb 2300     # Get Minolta 2300 DL .ICM files
    $ ./getweb 2430     # Get Minolta 2430 DL .ICM files

    $ .     # Get HP LaserJet 1000 firmware file
    $ ./getweb 1005     # Get HP LaserJet 1005 firmware file
    $ ./getweb 1018     # Get HP LaserJet 1018 firmware file
    $ ./getweb 1020     # Get HP LaserJet 1020 firmware file
    $ su OR $ sudo make install
    # make install
    # make install-hotplug      OR      $ sudo make install-hotplug
    # make cups OR $ sudo make cups
        $ su
        # make install install-hotplug cups
        $ firefox http://localhost:631
Then use CUPS instruction to set up the printer icon and links.
The readers should note that HP's own driver does not work, and Debian's Foo... driver is not sufficient. Hence, the steps are the optimal required to install an HP laserjet monocrome printer
