smplayer/mpv timecode erratic when stepping frame by frame

#1 Post by debbiethekiwi »

I'm using the . and , keys in smplayer to step back or forwards one frame at a time to write frame accurate English subtitles.ass as translations from burned in Chinese subtitles on documentaries. It worked fine while using Debian 10.7 SMPlayer (unknown) MPV 0.29.1. Since upgrading to Debian 11.3 SMPlayer 20.6.0 (revision 9418) MPV 0.32.0 a problem has appeared: when stepping back and forth over one frame transition, the picture will move forward or back, but the timecode shown (in milliseconds) does not change.

Also if stepping forwards towards a given frame transition, at the desired point the timecode shown is one frame less than the real time. This is verified by seeking the transition in pitivi, and by burning in the ass subtitle with ffmpeg. I have verified the problem lies at least in part with mpv by downgrading to 0.29.1 from Buster-old-stable, and the problem is fixed.

Question, is this a bug for mpv? or has something else in Debian Buster -> Bullseye broken mpv?

Sounds like an upstream issue. You should check for similar on their issues section or post a new one. https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv
Although the first thing they will likely ask is for you to install the latest version 0.34.1from Github to see if the issue still exists in that.

Nothing obviously similar in their issues, and of course they expect me to build it from source. I've checked the mpv 0.34.1 available for Debian Bookworm and the list of depencency upgrades is daunting. Last time I tried to build a newer version of something than Debian allowed, I broke a lot of other stuff
I'll live with the downgrade meantime, can't really mark this as [Solved].
