Hi Guys,
I've been confused with the instructions over the Internet about how I could properly setup the video for AMD Ryzen 3 2200g.
I was lead to believe that this CPU is ubuntu and therefore Debian compatible from the AMD website ---.
So after purchasing this cpu, I'm now having a hard time setting up the video. All I get is a 1024x768 resolution.
The most I understand from combing the internet is to use stretch-backports and install a later version of linux-image. I already did this and have my linux image running a 4.19.0-0.bpo.5-amd64. And I still cannot get a proper resolution. 1360x768 for now....
Any help is appreciated.

Which graphics card are you using?
I have a Ryzen 5 2500u with a Vega 8 graphics chip, the firmware & amdgpu driver in Debian 9 are too old but buster works for me — I get a better framerate in CS:GO under Debian buster than I see in Win10
Try the non-free RC1 installer:
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unof ... 64/iso-cd/
I have firmware-amd-graphics & amd64-microcode pinned from sid (both packages are needed):

I don't have additional graphics card as this AMD Ryzen 3 2200G CPU comes with its own GPU.Head_on_a_Stick wrote:Which graphics card are you using?

OK so you have a Vega chip, just like me.
Try buster with the firmware from there, that's probably sufficient.

Spot on!
Works like a charm. It also helps with a fast internet.
However, I have some questions about the preferences file - what does the content do? When I install regular apps from the repository, does it install the buster version or the sid version?

Re: [SOLVED]Proper Setup of Debian 9 with AMD Ryzen 3 2200g
The preferences file makes your system treat sid as if it were a backports repository so you have to target it explictly to install packages from there but anything you do install from unstable will be kept updated from that source.
If everything works then you could just remove the sid repositories and the preferences file and run a pure buster system instead.

Better completly switch to Sid in my opinion. That old stuff in Testing or Stable could cause many problems unless you own old hardware. I'm on Sid with latest Aptosid kernel (5.1.7 currently), no issues on Ryzen 5 2600 + Radeon HD 7450 no problems
