Volti package

#1 Post by Scorpion »

Volti is a lightweight GTK+ application for controlling audio volume from system tray/notification area.
Features: * no PulseAudio, GStreamer, Phonon etc. only ALSA is needed * internal mixer application, either choosing any mixer app is possible * left click opens volume scale (slider) * scroll wheel on tray icon changes volume, increment in percents is configurable * configurable middle click to toggle 'mute' or 'show mixer' * nice tooltip with card and volume info * support for multimedia keys * support desktop notifications on keys events
I installed volti but nothing happened, same when I launched it from the terminal.

Debian 10, gnome.

Did you reboot?

When you launched it from the terminal did it give you any error messages?

Yes a lot of times.
When I launch it from the terminal initially nothing happens:

Code: Select all

volti
It does not exit but no messages.

If I try again after some time:

Code: Select all

volti
Only one instance is allowed
Exiting

Nothing happens for me either. I use GNOME so there is no systray in which the utility can appear. The OP should probably tell us which desktop environment (or window manager) they are using.

I use volti. It works if you use alsa, not with pulseaudio.

I've just tested it (virtually) with PA and it seems to work (openbox/tint2 desktop).

Interesting. I use XFCE, and volti did not work if I had pulseaudio.

I'm using https://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=volumeicon. It shows up tint2's systray without issue.

Did gnome have a sistray before? On debian 9, near the dash.
On buster they removed it, right?
I am anyway using "AppIndicator and KStatusNotifierItem Support" extension instead, that moves the sistray(?) in the right of the top bar.

I installed pasystray, it is working in the top bar.
I also installed the optional packages:

Code: Select all

apt install pasystray paprefs pavucontrol pavumeter
There was also paman but there is no more on buster.

So also volumeicon-alsa needs the sistray.

Why do you want to use volti in GNOME? The desktop has a native volume control that works very well.

I checked Buster's volti in MX 19's xfce 4.14, and it runs well. If Scorp is running KDE, perhaps the icon is in the taskbar's overflow area. But KDE also has its own volume control widget.

I wanted to try volti, I am on gnome.

For example with pasystray I can quickly see the sinks, and select the default.
There are a lot of options with also the extra packages, I am now curious about paman.
I can set the apps to use a certain sink and there are some local sound server options.
