Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
Hello
I have issues on a HP elitebook 840 G3 laptop that seems to have come with the upgrade to Debian 11, had none before upgrading from 10.
The issues are system freezes. Often it happens with some very brief disturbance on screen like a flicker, that may even go unnoticed if not looking at the screen when it happens. Then the screen looks perfect but nothing can be done, all is frozen cannot do alt tab, move mouse, no nothing. Have to long press power to force shut down.
The CPU does not seem to spike during this.
I have searched and found a number of similar issues, it seems, but the different solutions I have seen have not worked.
It goes days between events, don't really see a common denominator either. *Maybe* I was using browser or having browser window focused when it happened on all occasions, not sure. Maybe it's correlation, maybe causality, donno.
System does not have to be under heavy load or warm. Battery is replaced and new and is original.
In syslog there are stuff like this right before the time gap to the next boot after freeze and forced shutdown:
gnome-system-monitor.desktop[69504]: glibtop(c=69504): [WARNING] statvfs '/run/user/1000/doc' failed: Operation not permitted
Maybe it's not related..

Any pointers on what to look for when troubleshooting appreciated.

Jorgen

You can try this to see if any change
and reboot
Code: Select all
apt install firmware-misc-nonfree
apt install linux-image-amd64=5.10.136-1

Re: Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
I would try
The µcode is probably already installed if the box didn't freeze under buster. The Intel DDX driver is not recommended for new hardware, it is rather buggy.
Code: Select all
# apt install intel-microcode xserver-xorg-video-intel-
deadbang

Re: Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
After doing adjustments as suggested herein I have now had yet another crash/freeze, some additional information just in case someone sees something new.
During normal work in system and filemanager the system froze with some weird disturbances from the loudspeakers, that were on. The screen shivered a little bit, was not 100% still as it usually has been on earlier occasions with problems and the screen was not holding a clear and steady picture as before, se attached pic.
I checked in messages/syslog and just as before, just before system freeze a number of these lines appear:
gnome-system-monitor.desktop[3171]: glibtop(c=3171): [WARNING] statvfs '/run/user/1000/doc' failed: Operation not permitted
That's about it, as noted earlier I appreciate any ideas, otherwise I'll just have to try to endure this somehow or perhaps try some other distro etc
TIA,
Jorgen

This is of course not acceptable.
You confirm you never had this issue with Debian 10 ?

PS: the line with the "Operation not permitted" concerning df I do not recognize from before, I use this command frequently and don't see it on my Debian VPSes either (the same wording that I mentioned in the syslog as last leg entried before crash/freeze).
Yes, I distinctly remember having associated these issues with upgrading from kernel 4 to 5, I do think I got the kernel 5 version when upgrading to Debian 11.

Re: Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
Probably related to Intel Skylake GT2 with wayland, but not sure.
try to remove xserver-xorg-video-intel
reboot, then again
If xserver-xorg-video-intel is necessary, reinstall it.
Code: Select all
apt install inxi
inxi -G
xdpyinfo |grep DRI
grep DRI /var/log/Xorg.0.log
reboot, then again

Re: Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
I have noticed a similiar issue with Bullseye. I have it installed on a 32 bit machine and 64 bit and both exhibit the issue. It will work when watching a video but switching between apps or choosing another app the mouse will pause and recover only when using firefox some times will it crash.
Re: Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
Always difficult to investigate without user feedback.
Other possible test: switch from wayland to X11, and compare.

Re: Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
I think the problem is corruption in the install media. I noticed on the live media I used to install debian-live-11.4.0-i386-standard+nonfree.iso there is no option to verify the media.
Re: Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
I'll try to run the setup unchanged now for a while and see if there's lasting difference.
I have actually experienced yet two new variants of system freezes shortly before trying the latest adjustment with uninstall xserver-xorg-video-intel (unsure if it worked though since it's still there with dpkg -l). Anyway I had system freeze when removing the battery cable and once when removing the display port cable. That happened once with each at different tines and hasn't happened since. Feels like a system event disturbing something in kernel etc.

Re: Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
I think you should run a system integrity check. I have found it always fails. To run it strangely you must start the install then go back then select integrity check for your media.

Re: Troubleshooting freezes on Debian 11
Answer totally unrelated to OP's issue which is about an installed system.
